RAIDZ v. RAIDZ1
So, I took four 1.5TB drives and made RAIDZ, RAIDZ1 and RAIDZ2 pools. The sizes for the pools were 5.3TB, 4.0TB, and 2.67TB respectively. The man page for RAIDZ states that "The raidz vdev type is an alias for raidz1." So why was there a difference between the sizes for RAIDZ and RAIDZ1? Shouldn''t the size be the same...

A few Newbie questions about RAIDZ
1. I have a 4x18GB drive setup as RAIDZ. Now when thinking about it in terms of RAID5 I would expect to get (4-1)x18 worth of drive space, but DF -h shows 4x18. Is this a bug or do I not understand? 2. Once again thinking in RAID5 terms if I have 4X18GB and 12X9GB drives and I want to make a RAIDZ of all of them I would expect the...

Convert raidz
Hi Is it possible to convert live 3 disks zpool from raidz to raidz2 And is it possible to add 1 new disk to raidz configuration without backups and recreating zpool from cratch. Thanks This message posted from opensolaris.org

raidz "ZFS Best Practices" wiki inconsistency
<http://www.solarisinternals.com/wiki/index.php/ZFS_Best_Practices_Guide#RAID-Z_Configuration_Requirements_and_Recommendations> says that the number of disks in a RAIDZ should be (N+P) with N = {2,4,8} and P = {1,2}. But if you go down the page just a little further to the thumper configuration examples, none of the 3 examples follow this recommendation! I will have 10 disks to put into a RAIDZ. I would like as little "waste" as possible, so that mean...

convert raidz from osx
I am converting a 4 disk raidz from osx to opensolaris. And I want to keep the data intact. I want zfs to get access to the full disk instead of a slice. I believe like c8d0 instead off c8d0s1. I wanted to do this 1 disk at a time and let it resilver. what is the proper way to do this. I tried, I believe from memory : zpool repl...

zfs? page faults
...artArray 5300 controllers and 12 drives in an array enclosure. I am running the latest opensolaris update bfu''ed from binaries since I could not build from source. I am controlling the drives with the cpqary3 driver (Solaris 10) from HP. Initially the array had 7 drives and I created a raidz zfs pool with them. The I got two more drives for the array and realized, after reading the list, that I couldn''t add them to the raidz pool. So I grabbed 3 other smaller drives and created a simple zfs pool with 5 drives to move the data from the raidz pool, in order to reconfigure...

Z-Raid performance with Random reads/writes
Given a 1.6TB ZFS Z-Raid consisting 6 disks: And a system that does an extreme amount of small /(<20K) /random reads /(more than twice as many reads as writes) / 1) What performance gains, if any does Z-Raid offer over other RAID or Large filesystem configurations? 2) What is any hindrance is Z-Raid to this configuration, given the complete randomness and size of these accesses? Would

Extending RAIDZ.
...ations: - We need to call vdev_op_asize method with additonal ''offset'' argument, - We need to move data to new disk starting from the very begining, so we can''t reuse scrub/resilver code which does tree-walk through the data. Below you can see how I imagine to extend RAIDZ. Here is the legend: << >> - block boundaries D<x> - data block P<x> - parity block N<x> - new parity block U - unused * - if offset in I/O request is less that this marker we use four disks only, if greater - we use five disks After adding ''NewDisk'&...

Hardware RAID vs. ZFS RAID
Hello, I have a Dell 2950 with a Perc 5/i, two 300GB 15K SAS drives in a RAID0 array. I am considering going to ZFS and I would like to get some feedback about which situation would yield the highest performance: using the Perc 5/i to provide a hardware RAID0 that is presented as a single volume to OpenSolaris, or using the drives separately and creating the RAID0 with OpenSolaris and ZFS? Or

General question about ZFS and RAIDZ
Hello to the forum, with my general question about ZFS and RAIDZ I want the following to know: Must all harddisks for the storage pool have the same capacity or is it possible to use harddisks with different capacities? Many thanks for the answers. Best regards JueDan -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

ZFS mirror to RAIDz?
...drives are split into two mirrors, one mirror containing my rpool (disks 1 & 2) and one containing other data (disks 2 & 3). I''m running out of space on my data mirror and am thinking of upgrading it to two 2TB disks. I then considered replacing disk 2 with a 2TB disk and making a RAIDz from the three new drives. I know this would leave my rpool vulnerable to hard drive failure, but I''ve got no data on it that can''t be replaced with a reinstall. Can this be done easily? Or will I have to transfer all of my data to another machine and build the RAIDz from scrat...

Best way to carve up 8 disks
Ok, previous threads have lead me to believe that I want to make raidz vdevs [0] either 3, 5 or 9 disks in size [1]. Let''s say I have 8 disks. Do I want to create a zfs pool with a 5-disk vdev and a 3-disk vdev? Are there performance issues with mixing differently sized raidz vdevs in a pool? If there *is* a performance hit to mix like that, would it be gre...

raidz pool metadata corrupted nexanta-core->freenas 0.7->nexanta-core
I made a bad judgment and now my raidz pool is corrupted. I have a raidz pool running on Opensolaris b85. I wanted to try out freenas 0.7 and tried to add my pool to freenas. After adding the zfs disk, vdev and pool. I decided to back out and went back to opensolaris. Now my raidz pool will not mount and got the following errors. Hope...

zfs raidz1 and traditional raid 5 perfomrance comparision
Hi, for zfs raidz1, I know for random io, iops of a raidz1 vdev eqaul to one physical disk iops, since raidz1 is like raid5 , so is raid5 has same performance like raidz1? ie. random iops equal to one physical disk''s ipos. Regards Victor -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

How do you "re-attach" a 3 disk RAIDZ array to a new OS installation?
Hi, I''m completely new to Solaris, but have managed to bumble through installing it to a single disk, creating an additional 3 disk RAIDZ array and then copying over data from a separate NTFS formatted disk onto the array using NTFS-3G. However, the single disk that was used for the OS installation has since died (it was very old) and I have had to reinstall 2008.11 from scratch onto a new disk. I would like to retain the data on t...

Solaris HDD crash, Restore?
First time user of Solaris and ZFS .... I have Solaris 10 installed on the primary IDE drive of my motherboard. I also have a 4 disc RAIDZ setup on my sata connections. I setup up a successful 1.5TB ZFS server with all discs operational. Well ... I was trying out something new and I borked my Solaris install HDD; the main problem is that I also had my RAIDZ zpool operational. I don''t think I can salvage my Solaris install...

6 disk raidz2 or 3 stripe 2 way mirror
I''m playing around with ZFS and want to figure out the best use of my 6x 300GB SATA drives. The purpose of the drives is to store all of my data at home (video, photos, music, etc). I''m debating between: 6x 300GB disks in a single raidz2 pool --or-- 2x (3x 300GB disks in a pool) mirrored I''ve read up a lot on ZFS, but I can''t really figure out which is ideal. I know that both ways will work but it seems like the 3 disk strip in a 2 way mirror is the most flexible as far as adding drives. Any help is appreciat...

OpenSolaris+ZFS+RAIDZ+VirtualBox - ready for production systems?
Hi all, I have been looking at various alternatives for a system that runs several Linux & Windows guests. So far my favorite choice would be OpenSolaris+ZFS+RAIDZ+VirtualBox. Is this combo ready to be a host for Linux & Windows guests? Or is it not 100% stable (yet)? Greetings, Evert This message posted from opensolaris.org
