OT: RAID5, RAID50 and RAID60 performance??
We have several DELL servers with MD1000 connect to it. Server will install CENTOS 5.x X86_64 version. My questions are: 1. Which configuration have better performance RAID5, RAID50 or RAID60? 2. how much performance difference? ___________________________________________________ ??????? ? ???????????????? http://messenger.yahoo.com.tw/

biggest disk partition on 5.8?
Hey folks, I have a Sun J4400 SAS1 disk array with 24 x 1T drives in it connected to a Sunfire x2250 running 5.8 ( 64 bit ) I used 'arcconf' to create a big RAID60 out of (see below). But then I mount it and it is way too small This should be about 20TB : [root at solexa1 StorMan]# df -h /dev/sdb1 Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb1 186G 60M 176G 1% /mnt/J4400-1 Here is how I created it : ./arcconf create 1 l...

CentOS 7 and Areca ARC-1883I SAS controller: JBOD or not to JBOD?
...f it is not what I expect, it will be long investigation why before I do something. Luckily never happened that way. Still, as you do, I prefer RAID-6, because even improbable can happen. Even if RAID10 can give you more speed (which with controller cache is questionable) I prefer reliability (yes, RAID60 is there too, but too wasteful for simple things we do). pvcreate limitations on big disks?
OK folks, I'm back at it again. Instead of taking my J4400 ( 24 x 1T disks) and making a big RAID60 out of it which Linux cannot make a filesystem on, I'm created 4 x RAID6 which each are 3.64T I then do : sfdisk /dev/sd{b,c,d,e} <<EOF ,,8e EOF to make a big LVM partition on each one. But then when I do : pvcreate /dev/sd{b,c,d,e}1 and then pvdisplay It shows each one as only ha...

slightly off-topic, RAID program for on-board SAS 2308-4i ?
Does anyone know what program can be used to query the RAID status from the OS for an on-board LSI SAS 2308-4i? On this page: http://docs.avagotech.com/docs/12351997 there is a curious note on the left that reads: "Integrated MegaRAID support available upon request" After one mostly fruitless round of chatting with LSI/Avago/Broadcom and one completely fruitless round of chatting

...ke you, I run always raid1 but in the last year I run a raid5 with 3tb wd red for my personal backup server but never got an error for the time. What about RAID10 vs RAID5, RAID6? You loss half size but is performant as raid5 e reliable as raid1. Have you tried other type of raid like RAID50 or RAID60? About resync process, all type of raid level are disk killer during this procedure or only raid5 (and similar) is a disk killer? > I also don't have much experience with spare handling as I also don't do > it in my scenarios. > > However in general, I think the problem toda...

Hardware raid health?
I just had an IBM in a remote location with a hardware raid1 have both drives go bad. With local machines I probably would have caught it from the drive light before the 2nd one died... What is the state of the art in linux software monitoring for this? Long ago when that box was set up I think the best I could have done was a Java GUI tool that IBM had for their servers - and that seemed like

...RAID10 in the past but don't do it now. If you do large linear read/writes, RAID10 may perform better, if you have lots of independent and random read/writes, RAID1 may perform better. It really depends a lot on how the disk are used. > > Have you tried other type of raid like RAID50 or RAID60? Yes I did in the past it even adds more complexity than I like. > > About resync process, all type of raid level are disk killer during this > procedure or only raid5 (and similar) is a disk killer? RAID 6 - opinions
I'm setting up this huge RAID 6 box. I've always thought of hot spares, but I'm reading things that are comparing RAID 5 with a hot spare to RAID 6, implying that the latter doesn't need one. I *certainly* have enough drives to spare in this RAID box: 42 of 'em, so two questions: should I assign one or more hot spares, and, if so, how many? mark

RAID10
Hi All, I am looking at ZFS and I get that they call it RAIDZ which is similar to RAID 5, but what about RAID 10? Isn''t a RAID 10 setup better for data protection? So if I have 8 x 1.5tb drives, wouldn''t I: - mirror drive 1 and 5 - mirror drive 2 and 6 - mirror drive 3 and 7 - mirror drive 4 and 8 Then stripe 1,2,3,4 Then stripe 5,6,7,8 How does one do this with ZFS?
