compaq r4000 /proc/cpuinfo reports 997 and should be 2400
Hi
I have a compaq R4000 with the 2.4GIG AMD 64 bit. 4000+ rated.
proc cpuinfo reports
cpu Mhz as 997.481
Do I have to run the 64 bit version to have things run correctly?
I just have the normal 4.2 loaded at this time.
The laptop seems slow for 4000+ as reflected by the cpu Mhz also.
Any thoughts on running the 32 bit...

compaq r4000
I am trying to install x86_64 on a compaq r4000 laptop.
booting the CD I have tried text mode only and graphicaly mode.
I see the normal stuff flying by and I just get a black screen (in text
for graphic install).
I have tried linux acpi=off apci=off nousb nopcmcia

all result in the same black screen. Once the screen goes black...

Anyone tried installing centos 4.2 on an compaq R4000?
The CD boots, I hit enter, starts uncompressing the kernel
detects my disks (last thing I see) then the screen is BLANK.
I tried "linux text" also and exact same thing happens.
THanks,

compaq v2000 working with correct boot options and compaq r4000 still SLOWWW
Hi,
I have a v2000 compaq laptop. The realtek network and USB on this
machine was not working. After adding to grub.conf
"acpi=off apci=off noacpi noapic"
the v2000 realtek started working and the USB worked fine... Fantastic!
So I thought I would try those same options on my r4000 laptop.
they had no effect.... This AMD turion 64 4000+ rating laptop is still
running SLOWWW...
/proc/cpuinfo has the cpu Mhz running at 2393
below is my dmesg output for the r4000. There is a line talking about
"Your time source seems to be instable or some driver is hogging interupts"...

compaq r4000 32 bit and 64 bit install
Gents,
I first installed the 32 bit version (as you might have read) of centos 4.2,
after downloading x86_64 the install process/progress is about the same.
going VERY slow...
The screen for formatting the partitions took a LONG time
(3 partitions 10 GIG, 2 GIG swap and 50 GIG).
While on that screen and moving the mouse it lagged big time and
could not keep up.
Anyway just reporting that so far

Chris,
I have a compaq AMD r4000 x86_64. grabbing the latest kernel
and compiling it fixed my clock skew.
I have not had any slow disk issues. again the kernel may help
doing the command:
killall -SIGUSR1 cpuspeed makes the CPU run faster.
Hope that helps.

current kernel 2.6.14.X
Is there a location for centos 4.2 that has a current kernel
compiled and ready to just install for the 2.6.14.X kernel? I am
wondering if a current
kernel helps with my slowww compaq r4000 amd64 machine.
Thanks,
Jerry

compaq R4000 update (hogging interrupts)
After a couple hours last night....
doing a "killall -SIGUSR1 cpuspeed" bumps up the /proc/cpuinfo
information for cpu mhz to 2393 Mhz. I did notice a little increase
after that. However, the machine is still sluggish.
I did a "hdparm -c 1 /dev/hda" but really did not notice any difference.
I tried to download fglrx64_6_8_0_8.16.20-1.x86_64.rpm from ati
(also 8.20.8) and get
