(Un)Usefulness of Vorbisgain?
I've just Replaygained several of my Vorbis albums with Vorbisgain, ranging from 80's metal to present day soft rock. What I don't understand is why does Vorbisgain actually make all tracks QUIETER? I see an average of -7db on most albums. And after that, not only are they substantially quieter than my MP3s (which is a pain), but it also fails to really "even out" the volume. I understand that a 1984 metal album is naturally going to be quieter than 1995 punk rock, but I was expect...

[PATCH supermin 0/5] Make supermin mini-initrd quieter and faster.
Various patches to make supermin quieter. By outputting fewer messages on the fast path, we use the slow emulated UART less, and this improves boot times. Also remove some kernel modules that we cannot or should not be using, which also improves boot times. Rich.

GeForce 8800GT fan control
I have a GeForce 8800GT that I am trying to lower the fan speed on. I can change the fan RPM from high to not-as-high but I want more control over it. It is too loud and it was quieter with the blob. Zap channels ringing too loudly
...t? Despite looking through the zaptel source code, I couldn't find anywhere that screamed "I'm the volume your phones ring at". Just a lot of scary numbers in zonedata.c, and cryptic comments in tone_zone.h Could someone suggest how I'd go about making the zap ring volume quieter? Thanks Nick

Echo problem
...with a variety of gain levels and training times, and with both trunk and 1.2 branch versions of Zaptel, Libpre, and Asterisk. In all cases, callers from the PSTN hear their own voice echoed back after 1.5-2 seconds; none of these adjustments made a difference, except adjusting gain made the echo quieter. When I just copy the microphone input buffer to the output buffer the sound plays OK. But if I encode and decode the buffer through Speex I get a high pitched constant tone in the background. I actually do hear my voice speaking when I talk, but it's faint and much quieter than the tone. Here's what my data looks like: Input is the first 5 floats of each input buffer. Low End NAS hardware.
...e to thinking. Bit of background. I have an old Dual Athlon MP2800+ that I'm using for a home web/file server. It runs fine but between the noise of the various fans and it's location in the living room, I've been asked by my spouse to find a replacement for it that's smaller & quieter. Looking at the Thecus, and based on experience with Atom based Mini-ITX systems at work, I was thinking about rolling my own. My questions is, for a small home server that runs apache/php/mysql and Samba, how well do the Mini-ITX boards like the VIA C3/7 & Intel Atoms handle this sort of task...

ices low volume
(this was also posted to the asterisk forum, but received no replies... Maybe someone here can help) I'm using the ices command to stream a conference to an icecast server. This is working nicely, for the most part, but the volume is very low. The streamed ogg vorbis audio is much quieter than what I hear in a SIP client, for example (on the same machine with the same audio hardware, of course). Opus hiding lower volume instrument
When experimenting with Opus encoder, I took a random FLAC file, encoded it, heard it, and heard the original file. So all files that were scanned 10 years ago with a reference level == 83dB should be fixed. And IMHO it's a good idea. b)...
