Converting smbpasswd from Samba-2.0 to Samba-2.2 ?
Hi,
I have a smbpasswd file from a Samba-2.0.x, generated with pwdump2 [1] . I'm in
a NT-PDC to Samba-PDC migration. The documentation says that it generates
Samba-2.0 style smbpasswd file [2]. But I would like to use the smbpasswd on
a Samba-2.2.x machine.
I've read that smbpasswd format changed . Is there a tool to convert smbpasswd
from 2.0 to 2.2 ? I can...

Three reasons for staying with Microsoft PDC's
...1. Local profiles. It does not seem to be possible to move from an NT4 PDC
to a Samba PDC while retaining local profiles. NT4/W2k machines consider
logons to the Samba PDC to be new users, even when the Samba machine SID is
the same as the NT4 SID, and machine accounts have been ported over using
pwdump2.
OK, so let's try....
2. Roaming profiles. Although these work correctly with NT4 workstations,
there remains an unresolved "Access Denied" problem on logons with W2k
machines, whether or not "nt acl support = no" is present in the [profiles]
section of smb.conf. Various p...

PDC Migration to Samba
...w user (or existing user on a new machine), on logging
on to the Samba PDC for the first time.
We've never used roaming profiles, they're all local because all our clients
are set up very differently.
Steps taken to migrate users:
1. Extracted user and machine accounts from NT4 PDC using pwdump2 to
generate smbpasswd.
2. Obtained domain SID from NT4 PDC using rpcclient lsaquery and placed in
MACHINE.SID.
3. Matched /etc/passwd to smbpasswd (user and machine accounts). Globally
changed uid's on all files on Samba box to match uid's from NT4 PDC.
4. Added PDC stuff to smb.conf.
5. De...

Migrating same domain
This weekend, we're replacing a customer's Windows 2003 server with a Samba box. They lost their Windows media and we can't reset the administrator password, so we can't even login to the server to examine it. The best we can do is to boot Knoppix and copy the filesystem onto an external USB drive, to recover their files. We're not sure how we will recover their Exchange mail

SYSKEY2. Request For Comments
...t an equivalent mechanism to SYSKEY, however i do
not have the relevant security skills to say whether a proposal is secure
or not.
i will outline the requirements, first, and then a possible proposal.
1) the SAM database may be accessible read-only (for example on NT, using
REGEDT32 or PWDUMP or PWDUMP2) it should not be possible to decrypt the
passwords, even though it is possible to obtain a binary or over-the-wire
copy of the SAM database.
2) a mechanism to encrypt or decrypt the passwords should be reasonable
fast so that any updates do not result in simultaneous accesses to the SAM
database...

How to switch from NT to Samba transparently?
Hi,
I want to switch from our Windows NT server
( which works as our PDC ) to Linux - Samba.
Could you advice a step-by-step guide about
this process, or is that possible, at all?
Can I use Samba as a BDC, convert the user
DB and than promote it to PDC?
Thanks in advance!

DID IT! - Samba 2.2.8a+LDAP+PDC
I am so stoked I just had to share this with y'all.
I just "SEAMLESSLY" migrated all of my machines and users over to my new
Gentoo Linux Server.
I even kept the same: domain name and old PDC NetBios name.
The trickiest part was getting all of the users to keep their same
profile, but I managed that by cloning the RID and Lanman/NT hashes for
the user accounts.
Free at last!
