Hi listers. People here are trying to push me into moving the Outlook .psts on a samba share for back-up reasons. I'd like to hear your experience about this: is it feasible in the size of 20 users with 400...800MB each .pst? Any special settings on samba side? Something special that I should pay attention to? Or is just "NO"?

Just plain drag&drop in Outlook doesn't work (gives a very cryptic error message in a certain folder, but that folder is perfectly all right), and using the import option also barfs when it's not even half-way through the PST. So, I took aid4mail and it converted the PST...

...for all intents and purposes the entire file is transferred. There are other files on this system that rsync more typically, so I'm fairly certain this isn't a switch or command error on the calling end. I have also verified that the PST is closed at the time of backup. I'm curious if PSTs are just un-rsyncable due to their makeup or if there is something I can do to pare down this transfer and subsequent storage. Any tips or ideas are welcome. This happened two or three weeks ago and it's happening again. Spammers are using Nabble to attack R-Help. The psts are signed radhi and the posts' titles are taken from previous posts and therefore seem authentic but all messages end with "click here". I suggest you don't. You should give us a look at your smb.conf. AFAIK from my very own experience: 3.0.21c somehow behaves different from 3.0.20 with the same smb.conf. Maybe you have to set some values which did not have to be set before. I am backing up customers data over a vpn using rsync. Someone requested to sign up for my offsite backup and they have exchange. I am wondering the best way to backup exchange with rsync. Can I just stop the services before the backup and then restart them afterward. Their uptime isn't critical so being down for an hour at 1am or something like that wouldn't be too bad. Any help

There are two problems I have with Samba My system: Suse Linux, Kernel version 2.6.12.5, Samba version 3.0.20-0.1-SUSE 1st problem: If I put my outlook.pst on my Samba server and tell my Outlook to use the network path to it, it screws up after some weeks. Occasional problems arise where the .pst file just will not copy from the users profile on the server. Doesn't seem to be related to the file size. Has anyone had issues with outlook and Samba PDC - (win2k clients). Solutions that have worked have ranged from complete loss of the .pst file to restarting users profile from scratch. thanks Alex Genna
