CLANG and -fstack-protector
Hello,
Does the -fstack-protector option work on CLANG 3.1 and 3.2?
There is thread on FreeBSD forums about the stack protector and ports
and I'm wondering if it's possible to use the -fstack-protector option
with CLANG.

can't build from source: error: template with C linkage
Hi All,
Users have contacted me because they can not build MCMCglmm from source. All are using R 3.3.0 on various machines with different compilers
gcc (Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.2) 5.4.0
g++ (Ubuntu 4.8.4-2ubuntu1~14.04.3) 4.8.4
Mac OS X El Capitan (version/compiler unspecified)
The issue seems to be with mixing C/C++ with the repeated error:
/usr/include/c++/5/bits/cpp_type_traits.h:118:3:

can't build from source: error: template with C linkage
This looks like the result of including a C++ system header inside an
extern "C" block. There is no evidence of this happening in the current
version 2.22.1. However, it did happen in the previous version 2.22 via
the chain of inclusions:
MCMCglmmcc.h -> cs.h -> R.h -> various C++ system headers
See Writing R Extensions P 108.
I would check that the people reporting this bug

[LLVMdev] Testing canaries
Dear LLVMers,
I am trying to measure the performance overhead (if any) of the
canaries that clang inserts in the code. I would like to do this
automatically, using the LLVM test infra-structure. However, I am not sure
if that is possible. Could someone tell me which flags in the
TEST.nightly.Makefile script, (or any other script) I must change to have
this done? Usually I insert canaries with

R CMD build wiped my computer
Hi,
I ran R (version 2.9.0) CMD build under root in Fedora (9). When it
tried to remove "junk files" it removed EVERYTHING in my local
account! (See below).
Can anyone tell me what happened, and even more importantly if I can I
restore what was lost.
Panickingly,

[LLVMdev] [PROPOSAL] Adding support for -fstack-protector-strong
Hello,
I plan to implement "Stack Smashing Protection - Strong" support in LLVM.
Below is a description of this feature and an overview of the implementation
plan. I have divided up the implementation into stages that can be delivered
incrementally.
I'm looking for any feedback (suggestions, requests, etc) before I actually
begin the work.
Thank you!

Failed to install RQuantLib in Ubuntu machine
Hi,
Getting rquantlib working on 16.04 was discussed just two weeks ago here:
https://github.com/eddelbuettel/rquantlib/issues/119
I'll repeat my findings here for convenience.
1. git clone|lballabio/QuantLib
||./autogen.sh ./configure --prefix=$HOME/.local --enable-intraday make
install|
2. git clone|eddelbuettel/rquantlib|and
remove|CXX_STD=CXX11|from|src/Makevars.in|||

pv-grub will cause page fault if build with flag -fstack-protector
Hi, List,
In checking the page fault problem when using pv-grub to start domU in
opensuse12.3[1], found that the problem is caused by ''-fstack-protector''
flag which is introduced in rpm build:
export EXTRA_CFLAGS_XEN_TOOLS="$RPM_OPT_FLAGS"
export EXTRA_CFLAGS_QEMU_TRADITIONAL="$RPM_OPT_FLAGS"
export EXTRA_CFLAGS_QEMU_XEN="$RPM_OPT_FLAGS"

[Blasphemy] Can I build dovecot with "-fstack-protector"?
I tried building dovecot using :
CPPFLAGS="-fstack-protector" LDFLAGS="-lssp" ./configure
That would result in a proper build, yet the binary would complain
once being run:
dlopen(/usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/lib10_quota_plugin.so) failed:
/usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/lib10_quota_plugin.so: undefined symbol: __stack_chk_fail_local

installation of dplyr
Hello,
I am getting a fresh CentOS 6.7 machine set up with all of the goodies for R 3.2.3, including dplyr package. I am unable to successfully install it. Below I show the failed installation using utils::install.packages() and then again using devtools::install_github(). Each yields an error similar to the other but not quite exactly the same - the error messages sail right over my head.

Enable gcc's -fstack-protector-all by default?
Hi all.
For a while, gcc has supported a stack protection mechanism
(-fstack-protector and friends, available in gcc 4.1.2 and up).
Can anyone think of a good reason not to enable it if the compiler
supports it? A quick test here shows minimal difference in runtime over
a full regress pass (~10sec over 8.5 minutes, and since the machine is
not entirely idle that could be experimental error).

You normally see these errors when compiling on a vm that has very
little memory.
