Python 3.x on Centos 7
Is there a way to install Python 3.x on Centos 7.x without breaking anything that depends on an older version of Python? This server is a minimal Centos 7 install that primarily runs a simple LAMP setup.

[Totally OT] CSS Best Prac. Rails Apps

Finding lshw and flash-plugin or alternates
Dear CentOS Gurus I have been using "repoforge.org" primarily to obtain two RPMs, "lshw" and "flash-plugin". I recently realized that "repoforge.org" should not be used, as it has had no updates for a long long time. But, when I search for the RPMs within the repos: base centosplus contrib epel extras updates th...

Encrypted remote backup?
Can anyone recommend a commercial off site remote backup service with a client (preferably FOSS) for CentOS 5, preferably that allows encryption of the data being backed up? Small scale, I'm primarily looking to just back up my mail folder on my server. I've been backing it up to local hd via rsync but that drive just died, I'd prefer to have it backed up to somewhere more stable than a home box and automated via cron (cli tools a must), but encryption is important, people are snoop...

R and Supervised learning
...s. 3. "Supervised Learning algorithm" is far too vague to be useful. 4. See this CRAN task view: https://cran.r-project.org/web/views/MachineLearning.html 4. The answer to your query is almost certainly yes, but you may have to do some reading to clarify your thinking. As this involves primarily statistical issues, you may wish to post on a statistical site like http://stats.stackexchange.com/ to get advice. R-help site helps with R programming primarily, not statistical methodology (although they do sometimes intersect). Cheers, Bert [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch recommendations
Hi listers, I am looking for people who have used Power over Ethernet switches, primarily in conjunction with Polycom IP 501's. I've been looking at the Linksys SRW224P, since I've had good luck with the SRW224 in our office. However, Nortel, Cisco, Adtran, etc. all have an offering, all of which vary in price. I would appreciate any input people have to offer. Thanks,...

vcedit on non-vorbisI streams
I've been looking at modifying vcedit so it will work on Ogg streams containing primarily Vorbis data (i.e. first page is the Vorbis header, most pages are Vorbis and a few are something else e.g. metadata or lyrics). I've managed to get something that works by: 1. During the header opening in vcedit_open push non-Vorbis pages onto a buffer added to vcedit_state and write them ou...

SCEV/IndVars Code Owner Nomination
...and has been responsive reviewing patches. He is clearly the authority at this point. Induction variable simplification doesn't do much but directly apply the results of SCEV analysis. It should have the same owner. IndVars does also contain a sign-extend elimination algorithm, but that's primarily a legacy pass and I don't expect much work on it. -Andy

zfs send/recv reliability
...en able to assess the reliability of a backup procedure which employs zfs send and recv. Currently I''m attempting to create a script that will allow me to write a zfs stream to a tape via tar like below. # zfs send -R pool at something | tar -c > /dev/tape I''m primarily concerned with in the possibility of a bit flop. If this occurs will the stream be lost? Or will the file that that bit flop occurred in be the only degraded file? Lastly how does the reliability of this plan compare to more traditional backup tools like tar, cpio, etc...? Thank you for any future...

which() function not finding certain numbers
Hi, I am using 32-bit R v 2.15.1, on Mac OsX v 10.6.8 with R GUI 1.52 Leopard build 32-bit (6188). I have also replicated this error on R 2.13.2 on a windows 7 machine. In some sequences of numbers, I am unable to use the which() function to index certain values. It seems to be primarily numbers with a 3 in the decimal. For example: > S=seq(0,4,0.01) > which(S==2.02) [1] 203 > which(S==2.03) integer(0) > which(S==2.04) [1] 205 > which(S==2.04) [1] 205 > which(S==3.03) integer(0) > which(S==3.3) integer(0) > which(S==3.) Recommendations regarding textbooks
Hello I was hoping to get some advice regarding teaching R in an academic environment. What are the best choices with respect to textbooks? When this question was asked a few years back, people were primarily recommending ?Modern Applied Statistics with S? and ?Introductory Statistics with R? as two good choices. I?ve also heard some good thinks regarding ?An R Companion to Applied Regression?. Has anything else really good come along in recent years? Alternatively, are there any really good companio...

Use of MathJax (or something similar) in .Rd files
Hello All, I am wondering if there has ever been any discussion/consideration given to incorporating MathJax (or something similar) into R for rendering equations in .Rd files. I know that equations are rendered beautifully in the pdf manuals, but I suspect the majority of users primarily look at the html help files when using R. While I am comfortable reading something like "B_x(a,b) = integral_0^x t^(a-1) (1-t)^(b-1) dt", it would definitely be nicer if this was shown as a 'proper' equation. Best, Wolfgang

Public vs. Private Network
Hello - I am looking at connecting 7 - 10 locations together using Asterisk and possibly some VoIP gateway appliances. I need to insure best voice quality as these trunks will be used primarily for customer calls. I am considering implementing a full T1 frame relay circuit to each location which can be done for a reasonable cost. DSL and Cable are currently at each location and setup for automatic failover. Should I remove one of my public connections and replace it with a private circ...
