I'm trying to use flac to make backups of my CD collection, and am
running into problems with disks that contain a pregap (or lead-in)
before the start of track one.
cdrdao rips these disks *WITHOUT* the pregap, and puts a PREGAP entry
into the cue file. For my test CD (Police, Synchronicity, catalog#
0082839373524) I get (in part):

Can you explain this to me? You don't actually lose the audio data, right,
just the structure of the CD (which can probably be captured with cue
files anyway)? I've ripped CDs with pregap audio before, and I'm pretty
sure it's not getting

I think we just set up 3ware IDE raid cards with 200-gig drives,
all on 1 PC for now (3/4 slots) and seems to work OK.
No case would fit them so it's just sprawled out on a desk away from
everything else with 4 power supplies powering the drives.
When it's time to buy more disks then I'll have to set up a

I see that this was the right place to fire off this question. Thanks
for your feedback. It has given me a base to start some trials. I used
to use EAC on Windows, but I tend to only use open source software as
much as possible and I don't use Windows any more. I gave a brief look
at abcde, but it is clear I need to look at this some more. It looks
like it has the potential to do everything I

As for the storage, I recommend something like AFS, that's distributed and
network-transparent. AFS/Kerberos has a tendency to take
over the network for use as an authentication protocol, but it's both
possible to use AFS/Krb in a hetereogenous environment and a good idea to
switch to Krb5 :).
OpenAFS is quite a good product, I am finding.
A few general notes: Isn't cdparanoia more

How do I blank or overwrite DVD-RW disks in CentOS 5?
I'm trying to use DVD-RW ("minus RW") disks in my LG GSA-4040B
drive. I can write a new disk just fine, but can't find any way to
blank or re-use a disk. When I run xcdroast and click on the "Blank
CD/DVD+-RW" button, I get "Error while blanking." Here is last part
of the dialog:
Using generic SCSI-3/mmc DVD-R(W) driver (mmc_mdvd)

best way to ensure integrity of flac source files?
if there was a flac-users list i'd be asking these questions there, but
anyway =)
on windows, i've been using eac in secure mode and using "test & copy" to
verify that the crc checksums match. invariably, i'll get one or two
mismatches per album i rip, so i figure the checksum verification is a good
thing despite the extra time. once i rip a cd, i want to forget

Actually, I was more interested in how you set up the disk array. The
biggest one I'd set up was a while back, when 60

Gapless Support
...to the difference. Typical DAT recorders
add a standard gap between tracks, and older tape formats (such as Sony
PCM-F1 on Betamax) have longer and less predictable gaps. A fraction of
a second added (or removed) in between tracks can make a huge difference
to how an album comes across.
The aim of pregaps on a CD is to allow the track skip buttons to hit the
beginning of the desired track, while also having the correct gap before
the track when playing through from the previous track.
Strictly, that silence isn't part of any track, but to preserve the
overall flow most ripping software will add...

NEC 1300A DVD-R writing
Hi,
so I just bought a NEC 1300A, primarily, because it allows me to write DVD+
and -RW. Using DVD-R discs (and currently no options to try other media, due
to shops being closed), I'm unable to write anything, using either the
dvd+rwtools port, or the dvdrtools.
I've exhausted all references to be found in google, which are in a language I
understand, so I'm hoping the list can

Archiving CDs w/ Flac on Unix (and subsequent re-encoding)
On a related note, are there any tools which can read the Index information
from a CD and preserve these in some file for later recreation?
The actual TOC on a CD has very little information: just the Absolute Start
Time of each Track. Is there any documentation of the "TOC" file format that
is commonly used? I do not recall coming across anything. Obviously, I am
