Cuesheets and metaflac
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I'm trying to use flac to make backups of my CD collection, and am running into problems with disks that contain a pregap (or lead-in) before the start of track one. cdrdao rips these disks *WITHOUT* the pregap, and puts a PREGAP entry into the cue file. For my test CD (Police, Synchronicity, catalog# 0082839373524) I get (in part): TRACK 01 AUDIO PREGAP 00:00:32 INDEX 01 00:00:00 Once I import this cue...

You don't actually lose the audio data, right, just the structure of the CD (which can probably be captured with cue files anyway)? I've ripped CDs with pregap audio before, and I&...

...iscussions should probably find a new home... The first two changes add features to the cuefile output, but are not strictly necessary (regardless, flac will stash the catalog and ISRC values, if present, so they're not pointless). The last group of changed lines is what actually converts the PREGAP into an INDEX 00 entry in the cuefile (and appropriately alters subsequent entries). naibed:/home/charles/cdrdao-1.2.1/utils# diff -u toc2cue.cc toc3cue.cc - --- toc2cue.cc 2006-09-26 16:31:51.916312146 -0500 +++ toc3cue.cc 2006-07-18 11:42:03.894698979 -0500 @@ -286,6 +286,9 @@ return 1;...

...at frame zero, you're golden. By way of example, below are some results from my "problem" CD (The Police, Synchronicity). First, I read the TOC using cdrdao...note that track one starts at frame 32, *NOT* at frame zero. When converted to a cue file and merged into a flac file, any pregap *DISAPPEARS*, which means you can no longer create a proper cddb discid! Even more, cdrdao *DOES NOT RIP* the first 32 frames of the disc!!! Maybe the first 32 frames are all digital silence, but I want to make flac files that *EXACTLY* match the audio on my CDs (kind of the point of lossless com...

I see that this was the right place to fire off this question. Thanks for your feedback. It has given me a base to start some trials. I used to use EAC on Windows, but I tend to only use open source software as much as possible and I don't use Windows any more. I gave a brief look at abcde, but it is clear I need to look at this some more. It looks like it has the potential to do everything I

A few general notes: Isn't cdparanoia more "correct" at audio extraction? And can't you emulate the 'pregap'-etc. effect with a .cue (or similar) plus the various .flac files? -- Asheesh. -- Q: What's the difference between Bell Labs and the Boy Scouts of America? How do I blank or overwrite DVD-RW disks in CentOS 5?
I'm trying to use DVD-RW ("minus RW") disks in my LG GSA-4040B drive. I can write a new disk just fine, but can't find any way to blank or re-use a disk. When I run xcdroast and click on the "Blank CD/DVD+-RW" button, I get "Error while blanking." Here is last part of the dialog: Using generic SCSI-3/mmc DVD-R(W) driver (mmc_mdvd) Driver flags

best way to ensure integrity of flac source files?
if there was a flac-users list i'd be asking these questions there, but anyway =) on windows, i've been using eac in secure mode and using "test & copy" to verify that the crc checksums match. invariably, i'll get one or two mismatches per album i rip, so i figure the checksum verification is a good thing despite the extra time. once i rip a cd, i want to forget

Gapless Support
...to the difference. Typical DAT recorders add a standard gap between tracks, and older tape formats (such as Sony PCM-F1 on Betamax) have longer and less predictable gaps. A fraction of a second added (or removed) in between tracks can make a huge difference to how an album comes across. The aim of pregaps on a CD is to allow the track skip buttons to hit the beginning of the desired track, while also having the correct gap before the track when playing through from the previous track. Strictly, that silence isn't part of any track, but to preserve the overall flow most ripping software will ad...

Archiving CDs w/ Flac on Unix (and subsequent re-encoding)
On a related note, are there any tools which can read the Index information from a CD and preserve these in some file for later recreation? The actual TOC on a CD has very little information: just the Absolute Start Time of each Track. Is there any documentation of the "TOC" file format that is commonly used? I do not recall coming across anything. Obviously, I am also
