Replaygain backend and ogg123 patch
My replaygain player side backend code is up at savannah: https://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/vgplay/ Pull it from CVS for the time being, as the file area isn't up and working just yet. It applies album and track gain values as scale factors to float pcm and includes an arbitary value preamp, a couple of limiting strategies. There's also helper function to pull the replaygain values from the vorbiscomment blocks, as calculated by vorbisgain. It also includes some more exotic features, such as the ability to change gain types and the preamp value on the fly, and the ability to ma...

how do I make my headset work
How do I make my headset work. Before I try it with anything else, I'd like to make it work with arecord and aplay. VLC and movie player can make sounds with my external speakers. though not in my headset yet. I've got an insignia NS-PAH5101 headset. As directed, the red connector is in the pink spot and the green connector in green spot in the back of my computer. arecord folloed by aplay

Playback + Replay Gain questions
...any way to have it adjust for a whole album or is it strictly computed on a track for track basis? Furthermore will decoding the FLAC file discard the replay-gain info? 3. Does anybody know of a good curses player for flac and mp3? What about volume differences? I remember having to boost the preamp setting in xmms quite a bit. I'd rather not have to fiddle when lifting rocks or shearing sheep or anything. Thanks for any assistance!

R128gain & metaflac
...e) quieter than replaygain. What that means is around 8 of the 16 bits in a typical music recording are unused, and I suspect most people would (rightly or wrongly) be horrified if you told them all their music was suddenly 8 bits. Turning up the volume cannot correct for that, although applying a preamp gain could. Music players that have adopted R128 or are planning it have often adjusted it by several dB to avoid the "too quiet" issue. With no standard in place concerning this and R128 itself being revised it isn't at all clear just what metaflac should do. Personally I think it...

New xmms vorbis plugin
...problems are sorted, I'll put the patch there for easier access). It's a patch or Input/vorbis tree for xmms 1.2.8 and includes the following features: - Replaygain is now implemented using vgplay. The main difference is that you get 'conditional' hard limiting, a full range preamp, and you can change the preamp and gain choices from the config dialog while the songs are playing. - It also includes a reimplementation of Stephen Bender's extended titles patch. Up top, this includes a subscript notation, like list addressing in python, for accessing particular members...

Turning up the > volume cannot correct for that, although applying a preamp gain could. Are you sure? 8 unused bits require gain equal to -48 dB. Gain values for very loud over-compressed tracks are only -10...-15dB, so only 2...2.5 bits are 'unused'. > Music players that have adopted R128 or are planning it have often adjusted it > by several dB to avoi...

Such a nice codec! Soundcard recommendations?
...is sounding _really_ fine these days. Waaaay past my ability to tell from CD on my crappy sound card, even at pretty low bitrates. Which leads to my question: there's a huge difference between what my sound card puts out and what my CD player can do (Rotel RCD-950 to Classe' Audio Twenty preamp to Acurus A80 amp to Epos ES-12 speakers, in case anyone cares). If my computer is feeding such a system, what's a good sound card to have? Requirements: * Has to work with Linux!!! * Not too expensive. This is fuzzy: I'd pay a few hundred for _really_ nice sound, but if I can pay $5...

(Un)Usefulness of Vorbisgain?
I've just Replaygained several of my Vorbis albums with Vorbisgain, ranging from 80's metal to present day soft rock. What I don't understand is why does Vorbisgain actually make all tracks QUIETER? I see an average of -7db on most albums. And after that, not only are they substantially quieter than my MP3s (which is a pain), but it also fails to really "even out" the volume.

R128gain & metaflac
Hi has anyone looked at adding R128gain code to metaflac so we can select to use this calculation for RP tags rather than replay gain? Inexpensive Flac player for separates system?
I'm after the cheapest way to decode a flac stream with following criteria; - Transport from UPnP (DNLA) NAS using either WiFi or Cat5 networking - Toslink digital out for using existing HiFi DAC. - Low power consuption (eg just few Watts - it's just a decoder anyway). There seems a real lack of Flac players that are cheap and HiFi separates integratable like current-day CD players. All

Recording piano and voice
...would be needed to make that determination. Most pro-quality audio interfaces will let you do this, or are line input only. To do this with a consumer card, you could set it for line level input and then run one channel straight from the piano's audio output and one channel through a mic preamp hooked to you microphone, with the output hooked to the other line input channel. Now, if you want to do stereo on the voice and piano, you'll either need a four channel card or you'll need to overdub, which Audacity among other programs can do. Ardour and Mixbus can do latency compens...

flac on pocket pc
...n this project being included in an official port (sometime) let me know. My reason for implementing the dll's is to include them into Live2496 which is a recorder which runs on Pocket PC. It uses the Core Sound (digital input device) which fits in a CF slot of the pocket pc. Using a front-end preamp/converter, we are recording 24-bit data to pocket pc's. Typical use is live shows, but we have some (10-15%)of the users doing sound measurement, wildlife recording, movies, speech analysis, broadcasting, and sound effects. I just managed to get my first file converted today, so not much testi...

winamp plugin can't apply +'ve replaygain
...lder CDs to flac that ended up with a positive album ReplayGain value. (+2.0dB) Problem is they sound noticeably quieter then other albums when played through winamp. (Album mode and ReplayGain are on) When played through foobar2000 they are louder as I would expect. I did a few tests. When the Preamp is down to -24 all playback is very quiet. When I put it up to +24 it doesn't sound any louder then 0. I'm guessing that no volume adjustments above 0 are being applied. Is this fixable? -- DS

A new era in Radio! Don't miss The Experimental Beat! (fwd)
...me time now, and was very excited to finally try it out. It completely lived up to my expectations. So I thought some on these lists might be interested to hear it at work. Unfortunately there's a bit of echo from speakers at one of the remote parties, and the other remote had a noisy mic preamp, so it doesn't always sound squeaky clean. But it's a great showcase of the codec and I'd love to be able to use it more in these sorts of settings. vorbisfile ov_pack_pcm patch
Here's a patch to vorbisfile.c in libvorbis that splits the float to integer pcm packing out of ov_read into it's own function. The good stuff: - ov_pack_pcm can be used by folks who decode to float pcm with ov_read_float to do various sound manipulations (eg, preamp, fades, replaygain). No more need to roll your own, which will really begin to pay off when 24 bit output gets implimented. - ov_read is now implimented in terms of ov_read_float and ov_pack_pcm to reduce code duplication. - I've included patches against libvorbis-1.0 and the lat...
