...e remote machine without a problem, do you see error messages there

Thanks, Akemi, you have hit the nail on the head!
The spurious error message was caused by a statement in .cshrc that created output, a stray unescaped exclamation mark in an alias definition. And that with me preaching to my users for years about cleaning up their init files ...
I feel stupid now. But not contagious, thankfully.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but something in this rant
struck a chord.

I (try to) see it from the user perspective:
I as user want to create users that work in all my ADS-domain, on all of
my samba-domain-member-servers, with as little overhead or additional

I wanted to stress that open source is not something that is just out there

used to set *standards* and raise the bar of quality in the software

2. Is there any hope of undoing this? Its only real impact is to annoy, and
I've always disliked systems that preach at me. (Detested is more like it, I
still remember how hard it was to delete certain files in Digital's TOPS os,
which was sure you ``didn't actually want to do that''.) Allowing some global

Any big heads up folks can offer as I set off to try building me a

SMB + Active Directory And No Ability To Delete Files And Folders
I hope that everyone is doing well. I'm new to the list and look forward to participating in the community. I've been using Samba for a long time and have always preached the samba gospel. :-)
I find myself with a peculiar problem. I have a RHEL6 install running Samba Version 3.5.4-68.el6_0.2 acting a local file server and it is tied into an Active Directory server for the user management. When a user on a Windows box supplies their Active Directory credenti...

Your report is very much appreciated. Thanks! I hope the fixed
version works for you.
Hint to other posters: It never hurts to check the facts before
wildly speculating and preaching about shells and operating systems.
Thank you.

Remove IE 6 and I agree, hahahaha. Actually, I hate Mozilla''s box model
(I know it''s the w3c recommended one, but it''s flawed. Width and height
should include padding and borders.

[Flac-users] FLAC/LPAC/Bzip2 better for archival?
Hi. I am a student with limited funds and storage space on my linux box. So I am trying to decide what audio compression scheme to use for my collection of audio tapes (recordings of one speaker, preaching in an church auditorium, recorded with low-grade mics and tape decks) converted to digital audio (16bit, stereo, WAV, 44100Hz). Is FLAC, LPAC, or a standard data compression format better for compressing this type of audio for long-term storage/archival purposes? Thanks for your help.

Mailing list HOWTO (Unofficial)
A few tips when submitting to this or any mailing list. I may be
preaching to the choir, but some of you can't carry a tune.
1) Make your subject short and descriptive. Avoid the words "help" or
"Samba" in the subject. The readers of this list already know that a)
you need help, and b) you are writing about samba (of course, you may
need to dis...

Inability to proceed with installation of Windows app
I used to use Windows; now I use Linux. One application I used under
Windows was MS Money; under Linux, I've been using Gnucash instead.
However, Gnucash has been causing me some problems recently, so I
thought of trying to use Wine to run my old copy of MS Money under Linux.
I downloaded and installed an RPM of Wine for my distribution,
wine-core-0.9.16-2.fc3.i386.rpm. That done, I used

Deprecation of scp protocol and improving sftp client
...an ugly protocol, but it works, works nicely from a command line, and is quite convenient. FTP (and, presumably, sftp) is not nearly as convenient.
Why do you think your recommendation to "use sftp instead" keeps falling on the deaf ear? Usability, perhaps?
Perhaps it's time to stop preaching to people about what they should use, but instead - if you really want a change - design, implement, and release a new tool that would combine the usability of scp with the security you want to see?
SFTP did not seem to make that cut. Next option?
