CPU Usage when idle
Hello guys, Did anyone noticed how green CentOS 6 is compared to the previous release? I've been running a couple of "CentOS 6" VMs (on our vSphere environment) for the last couple of weeks and noticed a BIG difference when it comes to CPU usage when the VM is completely idle. I would like to share what I've seen in our environment: PfSense 2.0 (FreeBSD) VM: 40 Mhz CentOS

Tinc power consuption
hello tincers, when I on battery on my notebook, running powertop, I get nic:<tinc-net-name> as the most power consuption resource in my notebook just after the screen. This happens no matter if I have traffic or not. I am not really sure that if this is really a tinc fault or a tap/tun implementation that never sleeps. any advice? -------------- next pa...

Power consumption monitoring
...found interesting information on how to perform CPU scaling (e.g. [1] or [2]). But I cannot find if there is a way to (software) monitor power consumption on CentOS (or other such data like CPU temperature, fan speed etc.). What I read so far is that support is quite limited in this kernel (e.g. PowerTop not providing useful information). Before I start tuning I would like to be able to measure whether my changes are having any impact at all. Thanks in advance, Mathieu [1] http://www.lesswatts.org/tips/cpu.php [2] http://www.spencerstirling.com/computergeek/powersaving.html

[Bug 98398] Vgaswitcharoo fails to turn off GPU properly
....com --- Created attachment 127486 --> https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=127486&action=edit New dmesg output after manually turning on power management So Lekensteyn asked me to run a few commands to also shut off the bus the GPU is on. If I do so and then proceed by running powertop on battery, intel_pstate complains about turbo not being available, a usb device disconnects, a while later Nouveau resumes kernel object trees, Bluetooth reconnects and nouveau suspends again. The commands are: # echo auto > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000\:00\:1c.4/power/control # grep . /sys/bus/...

openssh-agent polling
...ss? It forces the agent in the child process to poll the parent, so it can exit when the parent finishes. If the agent was the parent process, it could use wait() instead. I'm sure there's some reason. It'd be nice to take ssh-agent off the list of polling processes you get with powertop[1], however far down it is. too many wakeups/sec?
Hi, I would have filed this as a bug but bugs.xiph.org doesn't seem to work (despite quite enthusiastically claiming to :)). So here goes: I'm seeing quite a few wakeups/sec in icecast2 2.3.2 on Debian Testing. In fact, whether icecast is doing anything or not, powertop reports 44.3 wakeups per second. This is pretty big number, on my laptop it means icecast alone is responsible for every third wakeup on idle. I have no time to start digging through the code right now, but please post if you have a hunch where these wakeups are coming from. If I have time lat...

CentOS 6 : Tip for significantly increasing battery life / reducing power consumption (Thinkpad X220 Tablet)
...p://www.williambrownstreet.net/blog/?p=387, add the following kernel arguments to the GRUB boot configuration: pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 (in /boot/efi/EFI/redhat/grub.conf since I use EFI, /boot/grub/grub.conf otherwise) As measured using PowerTop, this made the power consumption decrease from 20W to 11W ! (I had already decreased it from 25W to 20W with the usual tips of disabling hardware, shutting down services, switching tuned profiles, etc.) All in all, battery time was more than multiplied by two, and the computer is now much more sil...

Dovecot waking every 50ms when doing nothing
Hi, My laptop runs a local IMAP server so that I'm immune from breaking my mail client, and when playing around with powertop I discovered that Dovecot (in particular imap-login) wakes up every 1000ms and then every 50ms even when no clients are connected. A bit of stracing shows this: gettimeofday({1180875699, 667917}, NULL) = 0 <0.000010> poll([{fd=7, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI|POLLERR|POLLHUP|POLLNVAL}, {fd=10, even...

[Bug 101404] New: GTX 970M (GM204-A) not powered off when not in use (DynPwr in stead of DynOff)
...is a Tuxedo XC1706 (aka Schenker XMG P706 aka Clevo P671RG) (i7-6700HQ/GTX 970M), external outputs (HDMI and 2 x DP) are wired to the NVIDIA card. The intel HD only has the laptop screen attached. Issue 1 (minor): ---------------- Without pcie_port_pm=off and on battery I see DynOff, but ~26W with powertop (i.e. nvidia card is not turned off). With pcie_port_pm=off and on battery I see DynOff and 16-18W with powertop (i.e. nvidia card is turned off). Issue 2: -------- With pcie_port_pm=off and on AC I always see DynPwr even though the nvidia card is unused (see below) - shouldn't this change to...

Learning Rails - Advice for development environment
...end; I have never installed any linux variant on a laptop, so when I did it was startling to find out how incredibly terrible the battery life / power management functions were. I was getting ~2 hours of life just doing simple web browsing. After spending an afternoon tweaking everything (using powertop, thinkfan etc), I was able to increase that marginally. Then, I had someone recommend that I use win7 as my host OS, and then use a VM for rails development. While doing some research, I came across Vagrant. I got it set up and installed using one of the boxes made for rails development, howev...

LatencyTop
I see Intel has released a new tool. Oh, it requires some patches to the kernel to record latency times. Good thing people don''t mind patching their kernels, eh? So who can write the equivalent latencytop.d the fastest? ;-) http://www.latencytop.org/ -- cburgess at qnx.com

[Bug 108058] New: After resuming from suspend, discrete GPU is powered on and can't be turned off

[Bug 98398] Vgaswitcharoo fails to turn off GPU properly
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98398 --- Comment #5 from rick.2889 at gmail.com --- Adding pcie_port_pm=off to my kernel command line causes the card to turn off and powertop to report ~7.5W of power usage. According to Lekensteyn this reverts nouveau to the 4.7 and lower behavior of using DSM, so I think this is a regression from using the new method. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. -------------- next part -------------- An...

sysctl and gnome desktop
Hi all, I use CentOS 5.5 x86_64 on my laptop. I have couple of entries in /etc/sysctl.conf entries according to the recommendations http://www.lesswatts.org/projects/powertop/ When Gnome Desktop starts something resets them to defaults. For example 'vm.dirty_writeback_centisecs = 1500' resets back to 30. Does anybody have any idea how to workaround this? Thanks. Andrej.
