custom sort routine
is it possible to write a custom sort routine for ferret?
I use ferret right now to index all my products. One of the variables
in these product documents is the product popularity, where 1 = best
selling production, 2 = 2nd best, etc..
Right now, I''m just sorting by the popularity column in my search
results, although this doesn''t always provide "good" results,

How to make Vorbis popular
Ogg Vorbis is still not known by the mainstream and not widely used
these days.
I've been thinking about this... MP3 is so popular because people can
download music for free (and thus pirating music).
I recommend Vorbis to everybody I know, but most of them refuse to even
try it because it's not popular (or because they are hardcore MP3
zealots), which results in a circle (little people

Acts as Most Popular plugin
Make your models feel like they are in high school again. This plugin
retrieves the most frequently occurring values for each column. It
adds methods of the form most_popular_[pluralized_column_name]. Check
out

for sample usage.
The plugin is mostly just a group_by in disguise. It is probably
overkill if you

Popularity of R, SAS, SPSS, Stata...
Hi All,
I've been fiddling around with various ways to estimate the popularity
of R, SAS, SPSS, Stata, JMP, Minitab, Statistica, Systat, BMDP, S-PLUS,
R-PLUS and Revolution R. It's not an easy task. You can see what I've
come up with so far at http://r4stats.com/popularity . I'm sure people
will have plenty of ideas on how to improve this, so please let me know
what you think.

Popularity of R, SAS, SPSS, Stata, Statistica, S-PLUS updated
Greetings,
I've just put out the latest version of "The Popularity of Data Analysis Software" at http://r4stats.com/popularity. This update includes complete data for 2010, the addition of number of blogs for each software, more coverage of Statistica, and, where possible, measures regarding the implementations of the SAS Language: Carolina and the World Programming System (WPS).

top 10/most popular lists
What''s the best way to handle views that show the top 10/most popular/
Recently updated/most commented type listing?
Should I have a separate model that is populated with records from
other models by a background job or should I need to use some sort of
caching? Perhaps both?
Thanks!

What linux distro most popular for Asterisk
Is there a recent survey of that Linux distro and version people are using for the Asterisk installations? I recall seeing a pie chart over a year ago (I think on a wiki but I can't find it again)....also hoping for something more current.
I suspect RH5 and RH6 are most popular...but I'm looking for facts

With the system I've outlined, there is no reason to cheat. There's
no need to fake listener counts because it's not there. Certainly
people can make this available in the 'description' field, ie, how

popular R packages
I would like to get some idea of which R-packages are popular, and what R is
used for in general. Are there any statistics available on which R packages
are downloaded often, or is there something like a package-survey? Something
similar to http://popcon.debian.org/ maybe? Any tips are welcome!

RFC for package PopCon: a popularity contest for R and packages
Hello all,
I've developed a prototype package called PopCon (short for popularity
contest), a package for tracking the popularity of R and its packages.
I'd like this work to be similar in spirit to the Debian package
popularity-contest: http://popcon.debian.org/.
Once Popcon is loaded, it captures two kinds of information from the
user and stores it into a cache: the names of the

[LLVMdev] LLVM parsers for popular languages? - Python, Rust, Go
IIRC when LLVM came out a bunch of community-contributed parsers were
available on your website.
Essentially I want to read in a programming language, prune the AST until
it contains only what I define as a "summary", then convert that AST to
that of another language, before finally outputting [code-generating] a
compilable/interpretable source [think boilerplate].
Would be good to

FreeBSD 5.4 SMP kernels now available via FreeBSD Update
It sounds like the SMP kernel I provided for FreeBSD 5.3 was quite
popular, so I've started building an SMP kernel for FreeBSD 5.4 as
well, in addition to the usual GENERIC kernel. To take advantage
of this on your FreeBSD 5.4 SMP system, run the following commands
as root:
# touch /boot/kernel/SMP
# freebsd-update fetch
# freebsd-update install
# echo 'bootfile="SMP"'
