take plunge and yum update to 4.6
Usually I am one of the first ones to do it
I have resisted this time...
It is almost the Holidays and out centos 4 boxes have been online for like 2
years or whatever
Has anyone boldly taken the plunge on any high use and/or Internet facing
Centos$ servers and done a
yum update
or a
yum -y update
without any problems at all?

taking the 3.0 plunge
I'm just curious: It seems that more and more people are using 3.0 (or
3.0a20). Obviously on this list we normally hear the worst (ie xxx
doesn't work, why?). What I would like to know about are 3.0 success
stories. Stability? Platform? Compiler? Gotcha's encountered?
Here is what I am considering: a Mandrake 9.0 box with it's default gcc
3.2, I am still using a windows 2K

The Big Plunge
Hola folks,
After a few years of slowly phasing in various Linux and BSD platforms, the
company I work for is willing to take a hard look at replacing its existing
Windows NT domain controllers with a Linux/Samba combination. We only have
about sixty people in our main office, but most of my experience is with
smaller deployments.
I'm not looking for step-by-step instructions, that's

OT: Forum or mailing list for Bash-related questions?
Hi,
The subject says it all. After a few years of writing scripts the quick
and dirty way, I've decided to take the plunge and learn Bash correctly,
using the O'Reilly Bash Cookbook. I'm currently looking for the right
place to ask questions, but curiously enough, Google searches about
"bash forum" result in nothing conclusive. I took a peek in the
corresponding USENET

[OT] Gentoo install help please
I''ve decided to take the plunge and go with Gentoo for my rails development
and test box. I figure the easy of maintenance is worth the setup hassles.
Anyway, I''m followin the instructions on the Gentoo web site. I''ve selected
the ..''i686'' 2.6 kernel for my 700mhz amd processor, and choosen stage3
install option from CD. I''m now at the the

XFS : Taking the plunge
Hi All,
I have been trying out XFS given it is going to be the file system of
choice from upstream in el7. Starting with an Adaptec ASR71605 populated
with sixteen 4TB WD enterprise hard drives. The version of OS is 6.4
x86_64 and has 64G of RAM.
This next part was not well researched as I had a colleague bothering me
late on Xmas Eve that he needed 14 TB immediately to move data to from an

Complete Linux newbie!
Hi, I've finally, after much deliberation, taken the plunge and installed Suse
9.1 onto one of my PCs at home - why I never did it sooner I didn't really
know until I came to "install" Wine; now I'm pretty comfortable with Windows
and "thought" things would be pretty much the same with Linux - first
mistake!
Anyway, I'm hoping that someone will be able to

Any pitfalls updating straight from 3.0.34 to 3.5.2?
Okay, so I've just put the sernet repo file in my yum.repos.d directory and a yum update will elevate my samba server to the latest version. Is there any pitfall that is out there that I can avoid before yum updating.
Centos 5.3
samba3-3.0.34-37 & related packages
openldap-2.3.43-3.el5 & related packages
I still have my samba3-3.0.34 packages squirreled away so I can force downgrade

Napster.......
Hello all.
I'm new(ish) to the world of linux and am about to finally make the plunge and ditch windows completely. However, there's only one program that I want from windows that I use regularly and that is napster for it's music subscription service. It really is a brilliant service as the choice and variety can't really be matched.
Now, I don't know if this is the right area

zapata.conf and zaptel.conf
Can anyone explain to me the difference in zaptel.conf and zapata.conf?
I'm trying to get a real clear understanding of them but its getting a
little murky in places. I will be setting up a PBX running asterisk with
2 T100P cards. I will be bringing a 23 channel PRI into one card and
connecting the other card to a Nortell 24 channel FXS channel bank. As I
understand it zapata.conf is

One VERY discouraged newbie...
After hearing all the rave about Half-Life/Counter-Strike on Wine I
decided to take the plunge myself... after rpm -e the default OLD wine
packages from my RH7.2 install I installed wine20011004 graciously
provided by http://www.linux-easy.com/daily/ ... setup my ~/.wine/config
and got VERY UPSET when Half-Life install would even work... barfing the
folloowing message! :(

Zpool mishap
Evening all, I''m new to Solaris but after drooling over zfs for ages I finally took the plunge.
First off I had 2x1Tb hdd in raid1 XFS format using mdadm, so using a opensolaris vm image I transfered one side of the mirror to the other in zfs. (using rsync and it took 3days!)
So with a 1 disk zpool carrying all my data I brought both the drives over in a new box, all going swimmingly

AEL2 and CID
Does anyone know how to get CID working in AEL2 ?
In extensions.conf you can do:
exten => 111/666,1,PlayBack(demo-congrats)
exten => 111/666,2,Hangup()
exten => 111,1,PlayBack(demo-moreinfo)
exten => 111,2,Hangup()
and if callerid 666 dialed 111, they would get demo-congrats, everyone
else gets demo-moreinfo.
In AEL:
111 => {
Playback(demo-moreinfo);

metadata
I think I'm going to regret asking this, but is there
any more information on Ogg metadata other than what's
at <http://wiki.xiph.org/Metadata>? Is there a more
appropriate list for discussing it? I'm sending this
to the vorbis list because ogg-dev seems to see very
little traffic, and none of the others seems to be
very relevant (this happens to be the one I'm subscribed

NAT problem assistance...
Hi folks,
I took the plunge recently to move NAT from my router to my shorewall
config, and mostly things are ok. Most traffic moves around without
problems but sometimes I am having trouble accessing external webservers
from non-gateway internal computers. I have stared at the traffic in
wireshark (even 2 wiresharks on different interfaces) but can''t see the
problem. Nevertheless

Help! OT: Blackberry IMAP client suggestions/experience needed
The CFO of our college, a most formidable man, had decided to go Blackberry and
Something Functional Must Be Done. We've had some users who we've not supported
(and things got better for them when we switched from UWIMAP to Dovecot).
BB, of course, has their half-baked sorta-IMAP-compliant client (and we do NOT
want the BB Enterprise Server) that persistently keeps grabbing the
