Samba 3.5.2 : root and Domain Admins membership
Hello All,
i noticed something odd after setting up a Samba PDC/domain. Seems that i am able to add machines to the domain by using the root account, but when i log on as root, it has no privileges to modify settings on the computer, particularly the computer name and Workgroup/Domain settings(they're grayed out)
i ran a net group "domain admins" /domain at the command prompt, and

samba as PDC with w2k clients
Hello!
A good day to you all. i'm trying to set up
samba(2.2.3a, right out of the rh7.3 cds) as a PDC.
i've already read through the Samba-howto collection,
and am confident that i've put in all the necessary
samba options.
/etc/samba/smb.conf:
[global]
netbios name = pdc1
workgroup = testing
security = user
domain logon = yes
domain master = yes
local master = yes

Samba3 ACL problem with Windows XP
Hello!
A good day to you all. i seem to be experiencing a
quirk with my test setup, as i am unable to delete
files/folders even with the proper ACL entries.
i am using the stock samba 3 package on
FC4(samba-3.0.14a-2), and have set up winbind
authentication against a Windows NT 4 PDC. i've
created two users, user1 and user2, which have their
primary group set to group1(gid=16777221) as

samba extd_audit question
Hello All,
i've tried to enable extd_audit on samba 3.0.34, and while it seems to be working fine, i can't figure out why it still insists on logging entries to syslog, even with
syslog=0
log level = 0 vfs:10
log file = log.%U.%m.log
or
syslog=0
log level = 10
log file = log.%U.%m.log
It's very counter intuitive...and quite impossible to do tracing for multiple users.

inconsistent log file names
Hello All,
i am using samba 3.0.28 and have set my log file naming convention to
log level = log.%U.%m
and have observed the ff logfiles being generated:
log..pc1
log.user.pc1
log..192.168.1.1
To make matters worse, logging of entries seem to be randomly appened to these files.
Any suggestions on how to cure this? tia

samba 3.2.7 oddities
Hello All,
i've recently set up samba 3.2.7(compiled from source) with LDAP backend and TLS. i've also used smbldap-tools-0.9.5 to populate and manage it.
i've also set up a BDC on a different subnet, using the same LDAP backend.
Wins support is enabled on the pdc, with the BDC and all clients' WINS server set to it.
Overall it's been behaving quite

smbcacls -- ERROR: unable to open credentials file!
Hello All,
Tried googling for more info on this...none found.
When i try to run
smbcacls //host/share/file.txt -A ACL:user:ALLOWED/0/RWX
the ff error message is returned:
ERROR: Unable to open credentials file!
There seems to be no mention of the credentials file in the samba docs or man pages; i've also looked into the smbcacls.c source code, no mention of it as well.

how to prevent forward/reverse lookups
Hello All,
A good day to you all. Is there any way to prevent
the rsyncd daemon f rom performing the forward/reverse
lookups for rsync clients?
Thanks in advance.

max. no of files(again)
Hello!
A good day to you all. we've recently had some
problems with samba (2.2.0) and sourcesafe. We had one
particular project with over 700 files on it, and
we've just recently encountered some problems with it,
i.e. "corrupted" files from sourcesafe.
i've read the archives, and someone mentioned that the
number is actually unlimited(or 6.4million at the very
least)...so

adding w2k computer accounts to samba 2.2.4 PDC
Hello!
A good day to you all. i'm trying to get samba
2.2.4 to work with w2k pro boxes, and i noticed that
only the root smb account can be used to add the
machine to the domain(the machine account had been
created in advance).
When i tried to use an account that is not root,
but part of the domain admin group, it returns various
errors, like "unknown user name or bad

samba pdc won't work with other samba file servers
Hello!
A good day to you all. the user accounts i set up
on my samba pdc can't seem to access any shares set up
on another samba file server. the pdc is has security
= user, and the file server has security = server and
password server = <ip of pdc>. i am testing the setup
using a w2k pro box. i have created the appropriate
machine accounts for the client and the file server,

samba 3.2.4 WINs problem
Hello All,
i have a PDC running on subnet 192.168.100.x, and i have set wins support = yes. i have another subnet 192.168.101.x where all my client windows 2k/XP/2003/samba clients reside. For some reason the WINs server doesn't update its entries whenever a client changes IP address -- it still serves up the previous ip address mapping. This only seems to be a problem with samba-based
