Aligning aerial photographs and maps
I have read in Paul Murrell's book R Graphics about how to use a bitmap as background for a plot (page 107). Also, I routinely use function read.shape() in package maptools to read maps in shapefile format. Now, I would like to overlay an aerial photograph in .jpg format and a map. I think I could do the alignment manually for each case, but wonder if there is a better, automated way. I notice

Acer Aspire Photographer in need of expert help
Ladies and gentlemen Can someone help me? I have just bought an AS One 120 gig+Linpus Linux as a photo storage device. It is a fabulous machine for the job as the screen is incredibly sharp and the whole deal is better than say the Epson P3000 device. I use a pair of Canon 400D's and only shoot in Raw. The default image viewer (gThumb??) is fantastic as it does a slide show at the same time

graphs superimposed on pictures?
Hi: I am doing some work that involves plotting points of interest superimposed on photographs and maps. I can produce the plots fine in R, but so far I have had to do the superimposition externally, which makes it tedious to do exploratory work. I have looked to see if there is some capability to put a background picture on a plot window, but I have not found anything. Advice, anyone? Chee...

ImageMagick : Centos GUI ?
...-6.2.8/www/convert.html and a web site http://www.imagemagick.org/ Does anyone have suggestions for a GUI which works for Centos 5.6 ? In production I run the command line program from PHP with 'exec'. Thank you, Paul. Currently automatically, rotating when necessary, downsizing photographs to 900 pixels wide (the software calculates the height) and labelling them with the file reference and photograph date - all in one quick operation. Mind boggling options, more than I've ever seen in similar software. Really amazed :-)

Using an image background with graphics
I would like to use a map or aerial photo as a background to plotting solid lines and text, and semi-transparent color contours, in base and lattice graphics. Plot coordinates need to be consistent with the georeferenced background. For example, a color contour plot would have an gray-toned aerial photograph as a background for overprinted semi-transparent color contours of some spatially

Which file system to use for a USB backup
I have some photographs on my Centos 4 server that I want to copy to a USB drive. However, I want to be able to access the files from Windows or Mac OS's. getting rid of hp c3180
...y away from Xerox in any event: I had to throw away several color laser Xerox printers because Xerox stopped making toners for them, and Xerox did all to thwart "aftermarket" compatible supplies). The only disadvantage of laser printer compared to ink is if you need to print high quality photographs: ink of different colors blends, whereas powder in laser printer doesn't. But all on all if you are not picky, photographs printed on laser printers look great too. Only people with special needs will be unhappy with laser and will go with ink for photographs. I hope, this helps. Valeri >...

Quadrat counting with spatstat
I have photographs of plots that look like so: http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/file/n4631960/Untitled.jpg I need to divide it up so each circle has an equal area surrounding it. So into 20 equal segments, each of which contains a circle. Quadratcount is not sufficient because if I divide it up into 36 equal quadrats...

[newbie]how to use link_to to link to another controller?
I am just diving into Rails and I am a bit puzzled by the link_to function. am writing an app to display my photographs in categories. My application layout has a sidebar to show a menu with categories from the categories table in the database (like in taken from the tutorials), to be shown on every page. I managed to get a global @menu_categories object that keeps track of all the categories that should pop up in...

Making TIFF images with rtiff
Many medical journals and publishers require that images, whether photographs or line art, be submitted as high resolution .TIFF images. One option for R users is to produce an image in one format and to convert it to a .TIFF file using a second software program. My experience has been that this option often results in images of poorer quality, often with blurry contours, a...
