Aligning aerial photographs and maps
I have read in Paul Murrell's book R Graphics about how to use a bitmap as background for a plot (page 107). Also, I routinely use function read.shape() in package maptools to read maps in shapefile format. Now, I would like to overlay an aerial photograph in .jpg format and a map. I think I could do the alignment manually for each case, but wonder if there is a better, automated way. I notice that the .jpg file has a companion .jgw file which may be of help. If someone has written code for such kind of alignments or can direct me to detailed instru...

graphs superimposed on pictures?
Hi: I am doing some work that involves plotting points of interest superimposed on photographs and maps. I can produce the plots fine in R, but so far I have had to do the superimposition externally, which makes it tedious to do exploratory work. I have looked to see if there is some capability to put a background picture on a plot window, but I have not found anything. Advice, anyone? Che...

ImageMagick : Centos GUI ?
...-6.2.8/www/convert.html and a web site http://www.imagemagick.org/ Does anyone have suggestions for a GUI which works for Centos 5.6 ? In production I run the command line program from PHP with 'exec'. Thank you, Paul. Currently automatically, rotating when necessary, downsizing photographs to 900 pixels wide (the software calculates the height) and labelling them with the file reference and photograph date - all in one quick operation. Mind boggling options, more than I've ever seen in similar software. Really amazed :-)

Using an image background with graphics
...would like to use a map or aerial photo as a background to plotting solid lines and text, and semi-transparent color contours, in base and lattice graphics. Plot coordinates need to be consistent with the georeferenced background. For example, a color contour plot would have an gray-toned aerial photograph as a background for overprinted semi-transparent color contours of some spatially dependent variable. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to do this? Thanks, Scott Waichler Pacific Northwest National Laboratory scott.waichler at pnl.gov

getting rid of hp c3180
...y away from Xerox in any event: I had to throw away several color laser Xerox printers because Xerox stopped making toners for them, and Xerox did all to thwart "aftermarket" compatible supplies). The only disadvantage of laser printer compared to ink is if you need to print high quality photographs: ink of different colors blends, whereas powder in laser printer doesn't. But all on all if you are not picky, photographs printed on laser printers look great too. Only people with special needs will be unhappy with laser and will go with ink for photographs. I hope, this helps. Valeri &gt...

Quadrat counting with spatstat
I have photographs of plots that look like so: http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/file/n4631960/Untitled.jpg I need to divide it up so each circle has an equal area surrounding it. So into 20 equal segments, each of which contains a circle. Quadratcount is not sufficient because if I divide it up into 36 equal quadrat...

The server isn't rebooting automatically, it only gets stuck. I still have a monitor connected to it, so I can see what's printed to the console. But the output is scrolled off screen by subsequent messages so that it's gone by the time I notice...

Making TIFF images with rtiff
Many medical journals and publishers require that images, whether photographs or line art, be submitted as high resolution .TIFF images. One option for R users is to produce an image in one format and to convert it to a .TIFF file using a second software program. My experience has been that this option often results in images of poorer quality, often with blurry contours,...
