Why Point-Stereo at 160 kbps ?
Hi there ! I checked Vorbis' performace for mono files at approx. 64-80 kbps (it does a good job) and I'm wondering why the current OggEnc still uses Point-Stereo (>10kHz) for -q4 and -q5 I know, we're usually unable to percieve those phase correlations above 10 kHz, But a Dolby Prologic Decoder isn't. I think a future version of OggEnc which is able to use a user-selectable stereo mode would be graet. I think back to the time, where everyone just realized that the old L3ENC destroyed phase correlations using intens...

Online banking with Ruby on Rails?
I am wondering if it would be possible (and safe) to develop online banking or other security-related applications with Ruby on Rails, instead of using J2EE frameworks or .NET? Are there any particular implications needed to write e-banking apps with Rails? Security problems? So... is anyone developing these types of applications with RoR? Any advantage or disadvantage? Personal experiences are

Giving full administrator privileges through sudo on production systems
...ose policies the way you want it to, then the configuration is correct. If it does not, then fix it. Incidentally, sudo stands for substitute user do. Meaning: executing something as a different user. I keep repeading it to proficient Linux users who sometimes need my help too, amazingly they all percieve it as a super user do, not as a substitute user do. Even though ?man sudo? says in the first line: - execute a command as another user? Just mentioning. Hello r-help! I have data with two kind of ratings on status of 100 occupations. The first kind of rating is on the percieved "objective" status that these occupations have in society at large, and the second kind or rating is on the status that the respondents think that these occuption *should* have. The ratings were originally integer values in the rage 1-9, but in the current data, I use their mean values...

What is Mandel's (Fitting) Test?
Hello everyone, A little background first: I have collected psychophysical data from 12 participants, and each participant's data is represented as a scatter plot (Percieved roughness versus Physical roughness). I would like to know whether, on average, this data is best fit by a linear function or by a quadratic function. (we have a priori reasons to expect a quadratic) Some of my colleagues have suggested the following methods of testing this: 1. For each particip...

MultipleUsersOnConnection, WTSE
There is a new regedit file in Samba 2.0.6 for Windows Terminal Server Edition that sets a MultipleUsersOnConnection value to 1. I can't find any documentation about this regedit in the source package or using a search of the Samba website. In Micro$oft's knowledgebase articles Q190162, Q233082, Q231798 and Q191370, it would appear that the value should be set to 0 rather than 1 for the

bindpw in ldap.conf
Sorry if this question is more for the LDAP community, but since I ran into this via the Samba3 by Example book, I'm asking here. :) As described in Chapter 6, PAM and NSS Client Configuration, in the ldap.conf file, is it necessary to have the bindpw line? From what I have seen, ldap.conf needs to be world readable and having that entry would seem to me to be a security risk. Am I

[Bug 479] New: tunnel0 and br0

Question about volume level recording in Ogg Vorbis
Hi I recorded many hundred of CDs in Ogg Vorbis with exactly the same parameters. I can see very big difference of volume level from one CD to another when I play it onto my computer or my portable device (iRiver HP120). So, I have two questions : * Is the reason of this fact is that it's depends on the volume level at burning time of the original CD ? If not, what is the reason ? * Is

Performance problem with ACCESS MDB files
Hi, We are using few applications developed either with Visual Basic or Microsoft ACCESS based on MDB database files. These applications were previously running OK when using a NOVELL 3.12 server. In order to reduce the amount of protocols on the network and other benefits, we've decided to replace the NOVELL server with SAMBA 19.18p10 (RH 5.2) running on a PII-300Mhz with 96Mb of RAM. We

Giving full administrator privileges through sudo on production systems
Hello, Consider two following cases: 1. On production systems on television stations, a sysadmin give teens (remaja group, age 13 and older) full administrator privileges by adding this line to sudoers: %remaja ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL Rationale: Almost all programs on the system can only be run by teens as root. 2. On production systems on tobacco factories, a sysadmin also give adults (age 18

Me, the grouser?

And by here I mean the Xiph lists. I've seen you speaking ill of our formats and of free software more than in one occasion. So, for what purpose do you still stick around? What

G.729? Worth it?
Hi All, For a small installation using ITSPs via DSL is G.729 a worthwhile exercise? I have G.729 capable SIP phones and my ITSPs cupport the codec so I could go end-to-end without transcoding. What's call quality like compared to G.711, GSM or iLBC? Michael -- Michael Graves mgraves@pixelpower.com Sr. Product Specialist www.pixelpower.com

Leaving out inaudible data, especially lots of high frequencies, give the resulting sample an extreme highpass filter and a swooshy sound that propably comes from those masked sounds (things of lower volume preceded by something loud cannot be percieved well, that's why lossy codecs drop them... as far as I understood). All this is completely normal and appreciated, because it saves us all lots of diskspace, and with OGG even at high fidelity. :) As said above, this experiment also shows what has been added by the encoder, in this case the r...

CHINA: Donation Scheme and Quality Community Development

And it is any wonder that open source cooperation here is failing as people fail to understand the "knowledge economy" that is central to open source? And IT is not expanding as it continues to be percieved as purely bits and bytes and not also opportunity cost and risk. So I on behalf of the Beijing GNU/Linux Users Group ask for some advice, pointers and tips for how in my own small way I can get some change happening here before all creative technological thinking and successful open sour...
