Use of contains in S4 classes

As far as I can tell, the Green Book doesn't talk about a contains
argument to setClass.

randomForest() segfaults under Solaris(SPARC) 2.7
...same compilers and flags.
It also reportedly works if gcc/g77 are used.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Too generic with S4 methods?

Among other problems, the lack of identifiers makes the semantics of the
signature obscure in this case.
Basically, would it be advisable to use different generic names for the
two functions listed above?

R does in memory analysis only?

Is there any thought of relaxing this limitation? I realize doing so
would be a big job. I also realize that 64 bits makes it much less
pressing.
Finally, does S-Plus have the same limitation?

packaging a package addon
...e at all. Is that true? If so, what's the best way around this?
Maybe stick the headers in a subdirectory and mess with the build
options to include them? And hope they don't get out of sync with the
real ones?

compiling 1.5.0 under Solaris 2.7 with Sun C and FORTRAN and gcc C++
...f possible, and I like the optimization features
of Sun C and FORTRAN for the UltraSPARC hardware.

is better (in fact, the opposite problem, their baseline is above the
baseline of the first line of the second column, though their tops are
not much higher).

problem with repeated formal arguments and ...

The FAQ says, in the section on differences between R and S,
"R disallows repeated formal arguments in function calls."
That seems a perfectly reasonable rule, but how do I handle this
situation?

glitch in terms documentation (PR#4146)

indicate if all.vars returns the same ordering as the variables
attribute (at least, I'm wondering it now, though this might be a sign

Question about looking up names

Calling R a la carte?
...not invoke the tests.
c) Write a small library that fakes the R routines I need, and link
to it when testing.

Error messages and C
...** p in the C code. Exactly how
do I use these things? Am I supposed to allocate a string and stuff the
pointer in the function argument? Or should I assume *p points to valid
space (how much?) and fill it in?
