Would RHEL, CentOS, and Fedora Remain Open Source/Free Software After IBM Buys Red Hat for $34 Billion?
Good morning from Singapore,
This is of paramount importance. Would Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), CentOS, and Fedora remain open source/free software after IBM buys Red Hat for $34 Billion?

Plain Speex, or GStreamer?
I wasn't able to find anything in the list archives, please forgive me
if this question has been asked before...
Our app needs to support multiple media types, so GStreamer would seem
to be the obvious choice. However, voice quality is paramount for
us. Are there any disadvantages to using the Speex plugin for
GStreamer as opposed to directly coding to the Speex API? In
particular, does the GStreamer element fully support the echo-
cancellation and jitter-buffer features of Speex? Are there any other
pitfalls that a naive devel...

Macros in R
...input[i] = matrix(nrow = 1, ncol = 107)
input[i][1,]=datset$variable
}
However, R never creates the required matrices. I have also tried to type
input'i' and input$i, none of which worked. I would be very grateful for
help as this is a basic question the answer of which is paramount to any
further usage of the software.
Thank you very much

use pssh to restart a service
Hey Gordon,
Sorry, man my bad! Disabling the tty requirement for my sudo user does
indeed work. I had a type-o in the sudoers file, and when I corrected it,
my sudo command via pssh started working!
#pssh -i -h es_list "/bin/sudo /bin/systemctl restart elasticsearch; sleep
10"

EXT3 Corruption Question
...n my laptop! ) so when they come to me with questions, I hedge my answers, and I don't like to do that.
Here is their inquery in a nutshell. 1) The filesystem is on a battery backed up solid state device. 2) they do not care about the time necessary for recovery and avoiding corruption is paramount. 3) OS is a non-RTOS 4) The power just went out, you have 20 milliseconds..... How can corruption be avoided in this case? CAN it be avoided? If not, under what type of circumstances would the filesystem become corrupt (so we can mitigate these circumstances)?
Thanks very much.

failed: Too many levels of symbolic links
All,
My dovecot install works great except for one error I keep seeing this
in my logs. The folder has 7138 messages in it. I am informed the user
they needed to reduce the number of messages in the folder and believe
this will fix the problem. My question is about where the problem
lies. Is the problem related to an internal limit with Dovecot v2.0.15
or with my Debian (3.1.0-1-amd64)?

...epo did not have anything newer, or

break something else.
> There are downsides to compiling yourself.
To be sure. (Incidentally, auto-updates are sometimes *not* what
people want -- stability of a working system is paramount over
anything that might jeopardize that.)
Compiling from source is not everybody's cup of tea, but it does allow
complete control over the build. Repo-packages usually are built with
kitchen-sink options, which may not suit everyone.

Problem with table
...arious times in R and Splus) but we would avoid it if possible. Please
no wars about whether this is the "right" decison or not, we've done it
for 10+ years and quite firmly believe the extra robustness gained by
having NA appear
is worth the maintainance bother, correctness being paramount in medical
research. We're not trying to convert anyone
else, just get feedback on the best way to approach this.

Using glusterfs with an export directory on an non-POSIX attr enabled FS
...n't access it from a native client.
If I try to do that, I get Transport Endpoint is not connected on client
and on bricks I get:
Aug 23 09:28:55 www-widget01 GlusterFS[24633]: [2011-08-23
09:28:55.210740] C [posix.c:4622:init] 0-thumbs-posix: Extended
attribute not supported, exiting.
It is paramount that the underlying FS supports xattr? If not, is there
a way to inhibit this dependency and use a volume created on /dev/shm?
Do I have any other options that would work with an export directory
located on a RAM based FS and not a disk one?
Best regards,
Sandu Mihai

cvs bulid breaks on slackware
cvs code from this morning (about 9am PST) breaks on slackware 7.1 w/ gcc
2.95.2.1 with an undefined reference to session_setup_sia in session.o.
this seems to be the culprit here:
#ifdef HAVE_OSF_SIA
#else /* HAVE_OSF_SIA */
session_setup_sia(pw->pw_name, ttyname);
since i have no idea what that's trying to accomplish (and seems to be a bit
backwards to me from looking

rsync over ssh - possible attack vectors
...through a dumb pipe just like for example rsync
over a samba share would and leaving all control to local?
Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, I searched but couldn't
find a definite answer. I'm also using rsync with "-c" as some kind
of poor man's HIDS so security is paramount. remoteserver is
as mentioned a webserver, it's question of when, not if, it gets
compromised, localserver handles sensitive files. Maybe not that drastic,
but you get the picture. To sum it up the question is, what's the risk
connecting these two systems? I thought about alternatives but c...

Another Fedora decision
...t exactly.

After all this discussion about "is this enough for good security or
should we add something else" the last not requiring tremendously larger
effort, I'm left with the following feeling. I'm a "relict" left from long
time ago when security was considered paramount, when if something can be
done it had to be done, no matter that the same is allegedly covered by
something else already in place. We always considered the word "paranoia"
is in sysadmin's job description (I still do, yet I didn't check IT job
descriptions lately, - maybe I should...

This is why it is paramount to use visudo command as opposed editing the /etc/sudoers file directly! The visudo command will check the edited temporary sudoers file syntax before committing to /etc!

...company on the S&P 500 and I can almost guarantee that 99.9% of them
will not have TLSA records for DANE. It's a new/emerging technology.
The same is true with DNSSEC (which is actually quite old).
Enterprises are typically behind in the technology they adopt.
Stability and reliability are paramount. This is where RHEL and CentOS
come in.
I know of a few companies listed on the S&P 500 who still have SSLv3
turned on to allow customers with old versions of Internet Explorer on
Windows XP to connect. You can't simply assume everyone is using the
latest technology.
This is the reason IB...

I am just curios how much do they pay you for advertising them in all
your posts to this mail list. Or what is different - non-monetary -
incentive you have for doing so?
