clipping off words inside a vector of strings
Hi, I have a vector of strings (class character) with 6 elements (length 6). I call it 'names'. "Graham Chapman" "John Cleese" "Terry Gilliam" "Eric Idle" "Terry Jones" "Michael Palin" And I want to turn it into another vector of strings called 'shortnames' with the same length. The new vector should look like: "Gra Cha" "Joh Cle" "Ter Gil" "Eri Idl" "Ter Jon" "Mic Pal" I just want to clip the first th...

Directional Forecast
I've some demand data, for which I wish to judge what will be the direction in the forecast period (Up/Down). What will be a best ML method to do this? Currently I'm using the data given below - 9/4/2016 241 9/11/2016 233 9/18/2016 226 9/25/2016 282 10/2/2016 291 10/9/2016 282 10/16/2016 308 10/23/2016 291 10/30/2016 268 11/6/2016 262 11/13/2016 273 11/20/2016 262 11/27/2016 309 12/4/2016

Results from clogit out of range?
I still don't think the exp(lp)/(1+exp(lp)) gonna work. Since this is conditional logit model, while this formula is only used in unconditional ones. By using this, one neglects the information based on stratum. Though I don't know how to solve it to. I am also working on a project on this and I do hope there's someone explaining this problem. Will that be a possibility that the phat

glmnet on Autopilot
Dear List, I'm running simulations using the glmnet package. I need to use an 'automated' method for model selection at each iteration of the simulation. The cv.glmnet function in the same package is handy for that purpose. However, in my simulation I have p >> N, and in some cases the selected model from cv.glmet is essentially shrinking all coefficients to zero. In this case,
