Using GIS data in R
I have a simple problem: I need to load a ERSI shapefile of US states and check whether or not a set of points are within the boundary of these states. I have the shapefile, I have the coordinates but I'm having a great deal of difficulty bringing the two together. The problem is the various GIS packages for R do not play well with each other. sp, shapefiles, maptools, etc all use different

Hyperthreaded P4 processor count
...ve three different live-CD distributions that give me different numbers for the cpu count on this box (Dell P4 2.4GHz). -the Knoppix 3.3 (11-19-03) says 1 processor (no error); -the PHLAK 0.2 distribution say 1 processor (and 1 missing) -the Local Area Security distro says two processors (identicle P4s). Might there be somthing new in 2.0.8 that accounts for this difference. Is there a switch or whatever that kicks the senond one into play?I would love to add the 2nd processor (given the kernel is SMPed). Rip Toren

XEN 2.0.1/Xenolinux 2.6.9 domain0 not booting on Debian Sarge / P4 Xeon
...el and immediately reboots. There''s no error messages and it doesnt even get to Scrubbing memory. This machine boots fine into 2.4.27. I have tried various permutations of kernel options and compiled at least 60 kernels trying to get this to work. All my other machines (none of which are p4s) upgraded with minimum hassle. I humbly attach my kernel config in the hope i have left something out. Thanks Tom

SHOULD I NEED TO RECOMPILE THE KERNEL ?
Hi, I am still runnig Redhat 9 box with sendmail and squid. It is quite slow. It has only 128 MB RAM. So I upgraded it to 512 MB RAM. Now, It is running with 512 MB RAM. But, It is still slow. No progress has been achived. Some users say it is slower than before. Actually, I also have noticed it is NOW SLOWER than before. WHY IS THAT? SHOULD I NEED TO RECOMPILE THE KERNEL as I installed a new

TDMoE hangs the machine
I was trying to use TDMoE and I lasted with two problems. First of all I can't configure the dynamic span to use CAS signalling but documentation (by Mark) says that you can use any type of signalling (and this includes CAS I guess). My second problem is related that my Linux system crashes frequently due to ztdynamic and friends. I'm using a 2.4.26 version kernel and zaptel

Full Screen Mode
Hello, Just finished installing Centos5.1 on two machines (P4s, Nvidia graphics, Gnome desktop) Running OpenGL applications and need to run in full screen mode without any frame borders or window icons across multiple monitors. ( 4 monitors with two dual-headed Nvidia cards in twinview mode ) One machine works just fine, the other retains the Gnome frame...

Well decomposed mdct
I did composition of butterfly8 and butterfly16 and I found, that these functions are well decomposed - decomposition doesn't lower computional speed. On the other hand the same can be done with butterfly8 - decomposition to butterfly4 (further decomposition is not possible) but there's no reason to do this. I think little improvement can be done by inlining them. Compiler and processor

Xeon CPU and ATLAS
I am about to get a new machine at work - an IBM Intellistation with the Xeon 2.8 GB processor. It will run Windows 2000. I would like to install the proper ATLAS dll for this machine, but I am not sure if Xeon is P4? Does anybody have any experience with Xeon? Thanks in advance, Andy __________________________________ Andy Jaworski 518-1-01 Process Laboratory 3M Corporate Research Laboratory

ATA refuses to answer a call?
I'm kind of at a loss to diagnose problems like this, yet we get them a lot. - The ATA (Thomson 784 in this particular case) is logged into the Asterisk server. 'sip show peer' shows their IP address, port, and useragent. - The ATA is connected directly to the internet (no NAT, but the sip configuration has nat=always) and logs in to our server, which is also directly connected to the

LLVM on IRIX
Greetings LLVM Developers, My name is Kazuo, I’m the head of the largest Silicon Graphics IRIX community on the internet. I’m approaching this mailing list to see if any MIPS developers who hang out here are interested in developing the LLVM/Clang Compiler system for IRIX. There’s a growing need as GCC removed support for us from 4.8, over six years ago and since then we’ve absolutely languished

libspeex/SSE Intrinsics with GCC 3.3.x
When compiling Speex 1.1.4 with GCC 3.3.2, the option -msse must be added to the CFLAGS in libspeex/Makefile. GCC 3.1.1 added a new option "-msse" (see http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-3.1/changes.html , specifically under "New Targets and Target Specific Improvements") to enable SSE instructions within the compiler's output (for appropriate architectures). Compiling speex on

Dismal R performance of Athlon moble CPU?
I have been using a laptop computer of Pentium III 1.13 Ghz. I heard that AMD's Athlon has excellent floating point capacity. So I bought a Athlon 2200+ laptop yesterday. I expected that new Athlon 2200+ will be twice as fast as the P III 1.13 GB. I ran a R simulation program and the new computer is only 30% faster, in fact slightly slower than a Celeron 1.50 GB laptop. I am very disappointed

CentOS on Compaq Proliant Rackmount Servers
Greetings, Can anyone relate experience(s) installing CentOS on Compaq rack mount servers units please? Easy no problem, easy some issues, or ghastly do not do it under any circumstances... ;) Basically, I'm looking at some used/refurb dual PIII units and will run RAID on Compaq built in SCSI or is it easy to pop in some 3ware SATA in them? Let me know in terms of CentOS 3 and/or 4 please.

Opteron Mobo Suggestions
I've been planning to build a dual Opteron server for awhile. I'd like to get people's suggestions on a suitable motherboard. I've looked at the Tyan K8SE (S2892) and K8SRE (S2891) but would like to find more Linux-specific experiences with these boards. Some features I expect are at least 4 SATA (SATA-300?) ports, serial console support in the BIOS, USB 2.0 and IEEE-1394

Rebuild of kernel 2.6.9-67.0.20.EL failure
Hello list. I'm trying to rebuild the 2.6.9.67.0.20.EL kernel, but it fails even without modifications. How did I try it? Created a (non-root) build environment (not a mock ) Installed the kernel.scr.rpm and did a rpmbuild -ba --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec 2> prep-err.log | tee prep-out.log The build failed at the end: Processing files: kernel-xenU-devel-2.6.9-67.0.20.EL Checking
