External harddisk
I have an old external harddisk, Toshiba 320 Gb, with a USB connector that I wanted to check for contents. It did not start up when connected and I could not hear the motor spinning. After leaving it in the freezer overnight the motor spins but it is not recognized by my computer. I disassembled it and could see that the head assembly rests outside the disk but when it is powered on, the head

LCD blanks out overnight
I inherited an ancient Dell Latitude C840 and recently installed CentOS 5.2 on it. It worked fine for the most part, but when I left it overnight and came back the next morning, the screen blacked out and wouldn't come back unless I did a hard reset. Even though I turned off all the power management settings and left it set like a desktop, the next morning after that it still blacked out. I

SSH backups - 1hr daytime; 8hrs nighttime
Hi, I posted the following message to the RedHat linux list to see if anyone had any thoughts about this problem. I have only received a few replies, all of which state that they have experinced poor performance problems with ssh on Solaris. They do not, however, state if it is openssh, which version, what hardware, or what version of Solaris. (All I can say is that we have had no problems with

overnight clients causing lockfiles to be converted to root-owned messages on debian lenny
Greetings all, After running for more than a year without issue on debian lenny while it was in the testing- we're now experiencing problems under Lenny/Stable. Dovecot now converts some sort of lockfile into messages, and they're owned by root. The result is a mess; clients can't read their mailboxes with the root-owned files, and when the file is changed to be owned by them, many

Memtest86+ running time
I have run one full test and got no errors on the memory module. Is it worth keeping it running overnight, just to see if temperature changes will afect the test? Regards, Keith -- In theory, theory and practice are the same; in practice they are not. This email was sent from my laptop with Centos 5.5

application always unresponsive overnight
Hi, I set up my application on Linux (Suse), running MySQL (which sits on a different server) and Webrick. It works fine. However, every morning when I come back to my desk, the application gets unresponsive. If I simply access http://host:3000 <http://host:3000/> I can see the rails greeting page (that means Webrick is running fine right?), but if I access any of pages in the

The case of the disconnecting network shares
We recently completed our Samba 3 to Samba 4 transition without too many serious problems but one rather annoying issue has cropped up since the migration. Network shares on our file server become disconnected overnight, whether idle or not. This was never a problem with Samba 3 but since upgrading Samba on the server to version 4 and joining it to the Samba 4 AD domain this problem is

Kernel panic - suggestions?
asterisk trunk from April 1 on fc3. Box has been up for several months with no issues. Overnight, this remote box died, and rebooting shows the following on the console: exec of init (/sbin/init) Failed !!!: 20 umount /initrd/dev Failed: 2 kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init Does this sound like a hard drive failure? The box is about 150 miles away and is inaccessible remotely.

KDE Dying Overnight After Centos 7 Upgrade
On two blades both with Atom Processors but different Graphics chips (a Matrox WPCM450 on one, Intel 82945Gon the other). One machine had distorted video and required logging out of KDE and then back again. The other one had no video and required ssh from another box to restart X remotely (which I didn't think I should be able to do). Does anyone else see problems with KDE ( or X) after the

WEBrick freezes overnight
Each morning when I return to work, I find that my WEBrick server has stopped working. The process is still running, but when I try to connect to it with a web browser, the browser doesn''t get any response back. Usually when this happens I cannot control-c the process to shut it down, and not even "kill" works-- I have to get rid of it with kill -9. I then restart it and it

Users loose supplementary groups after a time
All - I seem to be suffering from the common complaint that users loose supplementary group access after a while - in our case it seems to be connections left overnight. Restarting smb fixes it. I haven't been able to determine the cause. From the logs I've been able to determine a bad access looks something like this: AuthZ reports a S-1-5-21- SID: [2020/05/14 09:49:40.474490,

I can fix that in 4.0, but as I understand it we're going to drop support for it next release, so how about now?
