External harddisk
I have an old external harddisk, Toshiba 320 Gb, with a USB connector that I wanted to check for contents. It did not start up when connected and I could not hear the motor spinning. After leaving it in the freezer overnight the motor spins but it is not recognized by my computer. I disassembled it and could see that the head assembly rests outside the disk but when it is powered on, the head first moves to the center of the disk, then to the periphery and finally back to the resting position. This happens every few se...

LCD blanks out overnight
I inherited an ancient Dell Latitude C840 and recently installed CentOS 5.2 on it. It worked fine for the most part, but when I left it overnight and came back the next morning, the screen blacked out and wouldn't come back unless I did a hard reset. Even though I turned off all the power management settings and left it set like a desktop, the next morning after that it still blacked out. I thought maybe it'd come back if I switche...

SSH backups - 1hr daytime; 8hrs nighttime
...rdware, or what version of Solaris. (All I can say is that we have had no problems with openssh (2.1.1p1/2) on Solaris 7/8 with hardware from an E3000 down to an old sparc classic.) Anyway, I wondered if anyone on this list had any ideas of what might be causing a remote backup to take much longer overnight than during the day. I have now run 'top' on both systems overnight and noticed nothing unusual. A remote backup using ssh from the sparc classic to a sparcstation20, overnight, of 1GB takes about 90mins. So 2GB would take about 3hours. Why then does my P200 system to an Ultra 10 take over...

overnight clients causing lockfiles to be converted to root-owned messages on debian lenny
...ess; clients can't read their mailboxes with the root-owned files, and when the file is changed to be owned by them, many mail clients don't like the zero-length message (Outlook being one major client with this "problem".) This happens to users who leave their email clients open overnight. I haven't found a cronjob that could be responsible for this. Further details- 64 bit machine, we use maildir, /var/spool/mail is on an xfs volume, and we run postfix, procmail, and spamassassin. Dovecot version is 1.0.15; the machine is fully up-to-date with Debian Stable (Lenny.) Sample l...

Memtest86+ running time
I have run one full test and got no errors on the memory module. Is it worth keeping it running overnight, just to see if temperature changes will afect the test? Regards, Keith -- In theory, theory and practice are the same; in practice they are not. This email was sent from my laptop with Centos 5.5

application always unresponsive overnight
Hi, I set up my application on Linux (Suse), running MySQL (which sits on a different server) and Webrick. It works fine. However, every morning when I come back to my desk, the application gets unresponsive. If I simply access http://host:3000 <http://host:3000/> I can see the rails greeting page (that means Webrick is running fine right?), but if I access any of pages in the

The case of the disconnecting network shares
We recently completed our Samba 3 to Samba 4 transition without too many serious problems but one rather annoying issue has cropped up since the migration. Network shares on our file server become disconnected overnight, whether idle or not. This was never a problem with Samba 3 but since upgrading Samba on the server to version 4 and joining it to the Samba 4 AD domain this problem is happening most, but not all, nights. This is merely a minor nuisance for most of our staff but is a serious problem for those...

Kernel panic - suggestions?
asterisk trunk from April 1 on fc3. Box has been up for several months with no issues. Overnight, this remote box died, and rebooting shows the following on the console: exec of init (/sbin/init) Failed !!!: 20 umount /initrd/dev Failed: 2 kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init Does this sound like a hard drive failure? The box is about 150 miles away and is inaccessible remote...

KDE Dying Overnight After Centos 7 Upgrade
On two blades both with Atom Processors but different Graphics chips (a Matrox WPCM450 on one, Intel 82945Gon the other). One machine had distorted video and required logging out of KDE and then back again. The other one had no video and required ssh from another box to restart X remotely (which I didn't think I should be able to do). Does anyone else see problems with KDE ( or X) after the

WEBrick freezes overnight
Each morning when I return to work, I find that my WEBrick server has stopped working. The process is still running, but when I try to connect to it with a web browser, the browser doesn''t get any response back. Usually when this happens I cannot control-c the process to shut it down, and not even "kill" works-- I have to get rid of it with kill -9. I then restart it and it

Users loose supplementary groups after a time
All - I seem to be suffering from the common complaint that users loose supplementary group access after a while - in our case it seems to be connections left overnight. Restarting smb fixes it. I haven't been able to determine the cause. From the logs I've been able to determine a bad access looks something like this: AuthZ reports a S-1-5-21- SID: [2020/05/14 09:49:40.474490, 4] ../../auth/auth_log.c:751(log_successful_authz_event_human_readable)...

[LLVMdev] [llvm-testresults] Grawp-PIC i386 nightly tester results
On Feb 16, 2008, at 7:06 AM, Apache wrote: > New Test Failures: > test/C++Frontend/2008-02-13-sret.cpp [DEJAGNU] This test doesn't work with gcc-4.0, which caused it to fail on a number of testers overnight. I can fix that in 4.0, but as I understand it we're going to drop support for it next release, so how about now?
