I would follow this one up with those people... like Jason said, FLAC is
very cpu intensive, and if overheating would occur, it would be during a
FLAC encode/decode/verify pass.

You can dramatically reduce the heat from your EPIA board by turning on CPU
scaling! Once we turned it on, the heatsink was cool to the touch. (Even
with asterisk running).

Asterisk overheating on VIA Epia M Series motherboard
...e heatsink.
Currently system is running off standard IDE hard drive - because I couldn't
get astlinux to run with my Digium TDM04B card (only PCI card in system).
Strangely I also have the same system also running SUSE Linux running as a
file server and that does not run so hot and does not overheat? Why the
difference?
Just booting up both systems for 15 minutes you can tell the Asterisk box is
quite a bit hotter. Also the Asterisk box overheated (well think that was
the problem) and stopped operating as PBX at one stage.
Anyone any experience of this sort of thing? any ideas how t...

Just out of interest, how do you run the VIA boards? They only have one
network connection and if you add a PRI card you cannot have both a LAN
and NET connection?
(Highly offtopic, sorry!)

Powerful PC to run R
...on my laptop -- a Lenovo Thinkpad X201 (Intel Core
i7 CPU, M620, 2.67 Ghz, 8 GB RAM). The problem is that some of my
calculations run for several days sometimes even weeks (mainly simulations
over a large parameter space). Depending on the external conditions, my
laptop sometimes shuts down due to overheating.
I'm now thinking about buying a more powerful desktop PC or laptop. Can
anybody advise me on the best configuration to run R as fast as possible? I
will use this PC exclusively for R so any other factors are of limited
importance.
Thanks,
Michael

Overheating on laptop as compared to RHEL
Hi,
I have an acer 5738g laptop on which i tried out the centos6.4 live CD.
The laptop feels noticable hotter and i check the temperature using
something like cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/. The temperatures are around
57-60 degrees when the laptop is just idling, ie, just the desktop and the
terminal window open. I install lm_sensors using yum and it installs
successfully, but there is no

Need AMD debugging help
To all who have an AMD + Windows based PC:
I have gotten a few similar bug reports about encoding
errors with FLAC. The common features are:
- Repeatedly encoding the same file with verify will have
verify errors some of the time (looks like aroung 50%) and
the verify errors will occur in different places each time.
- This is happening on AMD PCs running Windows. More reports
come from

These attributes (especially their randomness) are all consistent with
slight overheating or memory problems in the hardware. Overheating is
common with AMD systems and will often only show up when doing something
like FLAC encoding. If the problem is overheating, just opening up the
case will often drop the system's temperature several degrees and make
these kinds of problems...

Centos blocked
Hi
I use to leave my PC turned on for a long time, but ultimately I've
found it blocked. The mouse just don't work and the keyboard leds are
blinking and there is no HD activity.
I'd like to know which log should I check, to find the problem or what
should I do.
I u need more details, please just make know how to give'em.

Well. overheating is possible... we don't live in the cleanest possible
house, AND we have cats. so, in general I open up this box twice a year
and vacuum out the house dirt and cat fuzzies. I'm probably overdue...

...e out, these tests run significantly more slowly when I run them during the daytime, which I did for that run. I checked a few of the worst regressions reported here and they all recovered in subsequent runs.
here is a crazy idea: during the day the room the computer is in is hotter,
and to avoid overheating the CPU frequency is reduced, resulting in the machine
running slower.

[LLVMdev] LLVM on OpenBSD
...ou mean you used your bsd-ports-provided gcc to compile LLVM and
you've got 4 times a bus-error during the build? In this case,
it cannot be a LLVM problem.
In the linux-community, people say that bus-error's are almost
always because of faulty hardware, e.g. problem with DRAM
timing, overheated CPU, power-supply that cannot provide enought
power during current surges, things like that.

compile optimization error in libvorbis-1.0
Wow, I've never seen an FSF gcc crap out like this on a non-overheating
system. When lib/envelope.c is compiled with -march=i686, gcc gets a
signal 11, but not with -march=i586. I'm not sure whether to blame gcc
or libvorbis. There are apparently three other files in libvorbis where
this same behavior is seen.

Dear group,
I am in the process of configuring 2 new servers. They are running Centos 5.5 and for the last three days they have been rebooting unexpectedly, can you point me in the right direction what to look for in the logs. I have been checking /var/log/messages but don't see anything that hint me any clues why this is happening. Your input is much much appreciated. Lisandro
