GLMM with lme4 and octopus behaviour
Hi all,
First time poster and a relatively new R user, I'm beginning analysis for my
masters degree. I'm doing a bit of work on octopus behaviour, and while it's
been fascinating, the stats behind it are a bit beyond my grasp at the
moment. I was hoping that somebody with more experience my be able to look
at my example and offer their wisdom, much to my appreciation :-)

R CMD check for packages in a bundle
Hi
[MacOsX 10.4.6; R-2.2.1]
I have a bundle that comprises three packages. I want to run R CMD
check on
each one individually, as it takes a long time to run on all three.
I am
having problems.
The bundle as a whole passes R CMD check, but fails when I cd to the
bundle
directory and run R CMD check on a package directory.
The whole bundle passes:
octopus:~/scratch% R CMD check

Help implementing a simple Python port
Hello list,
I wonder if anyone might be able to help me troubleshoot an attempt at
porting some simple Python code to R.
The function below is supposed to take a matrix containing item ratings from
various users and, given a vector containing at least 1 rating and 1 missing
value, employ a 'weighted slope one' algorithm to predict the missing
values.
The algorithm itself is fairly

We''re currently in a kind of weird place though with that 1.0 release:
the Agile Dev book is out in print, sold lots of copies to many eager
buyers, and it certainly assumes the pluralization conventions. It''s
clearly too late for that to change.

Pluralized Controller Names?
If I do:
script/generate controller Photo
I get a controller named photo_controller. OTOH, if I do:
script/generate scaffold Photo
I get a controller named photos_controller. (Note that the controller
name is pluralized).
I realize that I''m specifying the controller name explicitly in the
first case, but it seems
odd to me that the scaffold command generates a pluralized

Rails' inflections are messy
Yesterday, I opened a GitHub Issue<https://github.com/rails/rails/pull/7071> about
moving Rails inflections to an initializer. The idea wasn''t received well,
understandably, as generating a large initializer with new Rails apps is
pretty unappealing. However, the core members seemed open to the discussion
of alternatives continuing here.
For those of you not in the know,

Plurals in English (was Re: ClamAV reports a trojan)
...and as a
general rule of thumb...
tl;dr:
Words from Old English that came into modern English, use 'Old English'
pluralisation: eg, sheep, fish etc.
words adopted from other languages into English before and after modern
English established, use 'modern' pluralisation eg, tsunamis, octopuses.
<rant>
As 'virus' was adopted into English for usage in relation to bugs,
malwares etc. after the formation of modern English, the plural of
computer virus is computer viruses. IMO, in a medical sense, the virus
was first described in the 1890 - well after the formation of modern

No voice for SIP to ISDN?
Hi,
I'm currently building an asterisk system which should work as gateway
between SIP phones and ISDN. Most parts are working very fine, but one
problem occurs and I am not able to solve or debug it.
Telephony from ISDN to SIP (a Sipura Hardphone) is working very well,
but if the SIP Phone initiates the call, the ISDN phone rings, and a
connection can be established. But no one of the two

SPICE with Upstream QEMU and qxl VGA cause Windows BSOD
Hi all,
These days I installed xen 4.3 unstable from source and recompiled qemu upstream with spice support.
After xl create , the windows domU started successfully and spice client can visit the VDI. However, it display blue screen
before entering the windows welcome screen.
Is it a bug in current upstream qemu support?
My domU configuration file is:

Random Zap Channel Drops to SIP
Asterisk Version: 1.2.9.1
Zaptel Version: 1.2.6
LibPri Version: 1.2.3
Hey List,
we are running an asterisk server in connection with an octopus
telephone system. I have expired some random drops of zap channels
bridged to SIP Telefones ( snom 190 ). Asterisk Messages shows something
like that:
Jun 9 09:32:33 WARNING[3207] res_features.c: Bridge failed on channels

Questions about chan_dahdi, PRI, MWI (and Q.SIG)
Hello everyone,
My setup:
Debian squeeze
Asterisk 1.8, DAHDI, libpri, compiled from source
TE110P, attached to a Deutsche Telekom Octopus E Modell 300/800
I'm trying to get MWI for Voicemail working. In the same server I have
also got an Eicon DIVA PRI card for testing purposes (it is integrated
via CAPI and the chan-capi channel driver into my Asterisk). MWI works
just fine there.

[monorepo] Downstream branch zipping tool available
Building on the great work that James Knight did on
migrate-downstream-fork.py (Thanks, James!) [1], I've created a simple
tool to take migrated downstream fork branches and zip them into a
single history given a history containing submodule updates of
subprojects [2].
With migrate-downstream-fork.py, one is left with a set of unrelated
histories, one per subproject:

Re: Xen 3.4.1 Configuration Issues with Ubuntu 9.04!
Yes.
First remove old :-
# rm -fr xen-3.4-testing.hg
# hg clone http://xenbits.xensource.com/xen-3.4-testing.hg
It takes 20-30 min at 100Kb/sec ADSL connection.
# cd xen-3.4-testing.hg
# make world.
You always run "make world" UNDER xen-3.4-tesing.hg folder, NOT under /usr/src.
Do it step by step.
Boris.

samba/ldap setup stopped working (might be a challenge)
Hi,
two days ago my functioning samba/ldap server stopped working. I *think* the
problem is somehow related to the fact i transfered everything to a new
server, but that was two months ago. Trouble started yesterday morning after
a power-outage.
Configuration: ubuntu 8.04, with a standard samba, ldap and smbldap-tools
installed via apt-get.
When users tried to login, they got a message "a
