Occationally SIP ext apparently is busy and goes to VM
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 This occurs every now and then even though there's no one on the phone. I sit there by the desk, and all off a sudden the VM light goes off. I pick up the phone and I can make calls. No indication on how it would be busy. I don't see any entries on the * console, other than the caller is told it's not available. It happens to a

Something is writing a log
I can just be sittting, doing nothing, and I hear the sound of my hardrive head moving. Just every so often. Like some process is writing a log. I have looked in /var/log and do see occational updates to acpi and messages, but that does not account for all the clicks. Is there somewhere else to look for logs? I would really like to know what process has something to remember.....

SYSLINUX 2.06 released
I have released SYSLINUX 2.06; it's basically identical to 2.06-pre4. I'm doing this now because the bug fixes are so major and because I am not sure I'll be around next week. -hpa 2.06 is a bug fix release. Changes in 2.06: * ALL: Fix problem that would occationally cause a boot failure, depending on the length of the kernel. * ISOLINUX: Fix problem that would occationally cause a boot failure, depending on the length of directories. * SYSLINUX: Win32 installer now flushes buffers. * ppmtolss16: Be fully complia...

partial transfer
I am attempting to use rsync to backup a Win98 laptop to a FreeBSD 4.8 backup server. I have experienced the same problem at roughly the same point in the process on two occations. The laptop contains ~2.7Gb of data. On the first attempt we received this error at 2.3Gb and on the second at 2.4Gb. rsync error: partial transfer (code 23) at main.c(575) Would love to have a full backup of the

streaming to dialup users gives low quality audio
Hello, I've got two streams, one for broadband, one for dialup. Well, having had occation to use a dialup connection recently i checked the dialup stream. Although it was streaming what the broadband stream was, the audio quality was audibly worse. It didn't buffer, but it didn't sound as clear as the broadband stream. I used lame to encode the tracks to mp3 and used it's

fatal: Not enough entropy in RNG
Hi, I'm running openssh 2.1.1p4 on Solaris 7 (sparc). Occationally, when I boot up the server, the startup script I wrote to start sshd fails to start sshd with the following error: fatal: Not enough entropy in RNG What am I doing wrong?? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? Is just restarting sshd a valid thing to do?? Thanks for any t...

Laggy and faulty Samba server
Hi, I've installed Samba a few times, and I always have the same problem - except now I really want to get rid of it. My Samba server is very, very, very slow on occations (not always), and some times it's really annoying. What happens is that it doesn't seem to be online for a period of 5-10 seconds once every minute! If I'm copying huge files, it's working great, but when

Cleaning Up My Process Table
...he ServerCD. Who needs all the fluff that comes with a standard distro? If I want a system-config-gooey I can run Xnest [1] and ssh -X from my laptop. Anyway I have two questions: 1) How can I collectively stop all the NFS, portmap, whatever? I'm hoping it can be manipulated as a group because occationally I actually will want to use NFS. 2) Can I safely turn off dbus, hal, and/or xfs? Or will something really bad happen if I try to run the system-config-gooey's without them? Thanks, Mike [1] Although I haven't managed to figure out how to run it without -ac. 0.99.10.6 released
Since no-one have complained about previous RCs, I guess it's release time. Since -rc2 I added the ioloop.c assert fix, and 64bit Solaris fix. Calls for volunteers (take 2)
Hi all, I would really appreciate it if someone would be willing to deal with the messages to the list that get set out for moderation. Most of them are just round file material, but occationally real messages get stuck. Also, if someone would be willing to give the documentation and web pages a very much needed facelift, that would be super. I'm honestly thinking about hiring a tech writer friend of mine, but I'd have to pay real money for that (she's in a bit of a tough s...

Memory Usage with openSSH 4.0
I have friends running sshd on their emebedded ppc linux systems at two universities. Normally sshd takes about 3M of memory and they have about 16M freemem showed in /proc/meminfo. But occationally (every 1 or 2 weeks) they see free memory goes down really fast and they lose 10M in 1 minute. If they disable sshd by blocking the port access, this does not happen any more. The device is not behind any firewall and sshd version is 4.0. I've done a lot search on the web and have not found a...

High Pitched Noise
Question: After about having the server running for about an hour, our callers occationally hear a high pitched beep that lasts the entire call. In some cases, the noise doesn't start until a minute or 2 into the call, while others last the entire call. In some of the more serious cases, calls are dropped after the noise has occurred as well. Another symptom has been really bad stati...

streaming to dialup users gives low quality audio
Hi, Currently streaming ogg isn't practical in this situation. That was one of the first things i checked into. WHen i looked i didn't see a streamer that did both ogg and mp3. Thanks. Safe to UNPROTECT() when object is assigned to a list?
Hi, I'm troubleshooting some native code on Windows that very occationally (and semi-randomly) crashes R. Already looked at "everything", I just want to double check that it is safe to UNPROTECT() allocated variables as soon as they are assigned to, say, a PROTECTed list. >From (R v2.3.0) Section 5.7.1 "Handling the effects of garbage collection"...

Shared Folders?
Hello everybody (esp. Timo ;)), in an attempt to replace our cyrus imapd with something less bloated I have recently evaluated some of the younger imapd implementations, namely bincimap and also dovecot. Bincimap didn't work properly with mozilla for me, dovecot hasn't failed on any test, yet. Unfornationally, since we have been using cyrus for over 1.5 yrs, we pretty much depend on the

odd error between vfat and samba
[Please Cc: timball@tux.org on replies because I'm not on the samba list] Setup: Samba 2.0.7 (from debian sid), Linux 2.4.3-XFS, Window95, Windows98 Problem: I have a linux machine that I occationally duel boot and I wanted to be able to share my mp3s directory to my roomate via samba. I figured I'd just make a partition vfat and have both linux and windows export that directory... but under linux there seems to be an odd issue w/ creating a file larger than 800K on the samba share.
