Can't join domain - new machine name
...accounts then try to join the existing client machines to the domain using the new names (ie I'm trying to change the clients name at the same time as I join it to the domain), I get an error about an RPC call failing. Any ideas? pdbedit
I have a couple of questions about pdbedit. I am having trouble using pdbedit in shell scripts. First, on a freshly installed system with no-one in the tdbsam database, trying to add multiple machine accounts via a loop construct in a shell script fails with a message that the database can't be found/doesn't exist. I then added root manually just to get the system going, which solves

Need a working model of smb.conf for a PDC
Having some major troubles with smb and making it a PDC For 2 weeks now I have been testing, and retesting. At one point I had it all working except for password changing. Has anyone goten Samba 3.0.4 to work correctly as a PDC with an smbpasswd back ground (not pam or ldap). If so could you please send me a working copy of your SMB file (only core components needed, no need for shares or

Samba Upgrade
Hi Folks, I would really appreciate any words of wisdom people here could provide me. I have Samba 2.2.7a, as shipped with RH 9.0, running on a server, supporting about 25 W2k clients. The linux kernel is running in SMP mode to use the Hyper-Threaded Pentium-4 CPU. I have tried to create the simplest SAMBA setup possible, so have no LDAP, ACLS, etc. The 25 w2k clients are all architects

Bourne shell deprecated?
...rsa, which can be problematic if, say, moving a Linux script to a BSD or AIX box. I remember something I'd done which used, IIRC, $UID, without realizing it was a bashism, instead of using id -u. I'll also note that all *production* scripts were once required to be bourne, but by the mid-ninties, management was starting to mandate that they be Korn shell, instead, for many reasons - capabilities, etc. Bash - I don't think I saw that till I started running RH 5.1, I think it was, about 18 years ago.... mark

Newbie group mapping question
I'm wondering if, in a context where samba 3.0.4 is PDC for an NT domain with XP clients, it is necessary or at least normal practice to map most/all NT groups (eg Domain Admins, Domain Users) to unix groups? Also, I notice when I do 'net groupmap list' that there are not only Domain Admins, Domain Users and Domain Guests, but also plain Admins, Users and Guests. What is the

local admin permissions
We have implemented an NT domain with samba 3.0.4 PDC on Slackware 9.1 and Win XP Pro clients. Everything is working nicely except for one issue. I haven't used Windows for years, so possibly I just don't understand something basic about Windows XP security ... Having logged in (to the domain), users are unable to perform tasks such as update certain files on the local system, for example

samba 3.0.4 domain woes
G'day: Folks, I'm at my wits end trying to join a WIN XP Professional client to a samba 3.0.4 domain running on Slackware 9.1. I haven't used windows since Win 95 days and am not up to speed with it at all. Also, i've tried the O'Reilly Using Samba book (2nd edition), read the samba docs, and browsed the mailing lists but there is so much information I'm even more

NT Domain login problem
I have set up an NT domain using samba 3.0.4 on Slackware 9.1 with Win XP clients. Security = user, samba is PDC and WINS server. I'm new to samba and working most things out as I go, but have one persistent problem: Some clients frequently refuse to log in to the domain, a situation that can only be remedied by, for example, logging in as local administrator on the XP machine, then logging
