Marking as Read causes Body.Peek on ALL messages - Reasonable?
I've noticed when I select a folder of messages (Thunderbird) and mark
them all as read (or unread) it produces the following IMAP transcript:

Spliting Folders for Efficiency
Dear Timo,
Would there be any sense in giving Dovecot the option to split folders
into multiple subfolders when they reached a specified size (probably
message count) limit?
Dovecot would monitor folders and when they reached, say, 10,000
messages, silently split the folder on the filesystem to ensure that
access remains fast.
I know that Dovecot scales very well but this would give

Recommended FS for Dovecot Maildir
Hi,
I've heard that for Dovecot/Mailir systems there are filesystems that
are optimised for the situation of many small files in one folder.
Could I possibly have some feedback on what the recommended filesystems
are? I've heard of ReiserFS but was wondering what other options there
are and how they compare.
If I get a good comprehensive response I'll build a wiki summary page

Upgrading a live running dovecot - how?
Hi Guys,
This has bitten us twice now. We're running Gentoo and emerge (ie
compile) a new version of Dovecot thinking we can finish that then
restart Dovecot in our own time.
It seems that Dovecot immediately starts to use the newly compiled
Dovecot binary and we get version mismatch errors preventing access.
Would be good if Dovecot behaved in such a way that it kept on using the

dovecot process nice value
My imap processes seem to all be running with a nice value of -15 (top
priority). Is this usual? Not sure if this is a dovecot setting or
something going on with my own system configuration somewhere.
I know the userdb query can set the nice value but mine (a mysql query)
does not...
We're having problems with our mail partition being absolutely thrashed
and thought over-strong imap

Corrupt Message?
Dear List,
Am accessing dovecot imap through squirrelmail.
Squirrelmail paginates the message list into pages.
All works fine except for the page one particular email is in. When I
try to open that page (or in fact click 'show all') the server returns:
ERROR: Bad or malformed request.
Query: FETCH 549,551,555:557,563,565,567:569 (FLAGS UID RFC822.SIZE

Can Dovecot 'slurp' into the INBOX from a mail spool file?
Hi guys,
I have a system whereby I am forced to deal with mbox files of
/var/spool/mail/user1 (mbox text file)
/var/spool/mail/user2 (mbox text file)
etc
Their mail homes are maildir format in:
/home/user1/Maildir/{cur,new,tmp}
/home/user2/Maildir/{cur,new,tmp}
etc
I can set things up so that the mbox inbox is shown using namespaces:
namespace private {
separator = /
prefix =

Asterisks (*) in Folder Names disallowed?
As far as I can see the RFC for IMAP should allow the * character in the
folder name. This is certainly allowed in UW IMAP.
Dovecot seems to object however with:
ERROR : Could not complete request.
Query: COPY 9975:9975 "mail/*myfolder"
Reason Given: Invalid mailbox name.
Could this restriction be lifted?
Best wishes,
Daniel

Deleting when Over Quota
Hi All,
I've read a bit about this but don't really see a full solution
anywhere. Has anyone actually got a good fix for this?
Telling a user they are over quota then not allowing them to delete
anything does seem the height of perversion. =)
Question is - is this even a problem for the IMAP server? Or should the
MUA be detecting over quota problems and then issuing the right

Sorting by Sender Name
Dear Timo,
Posted this originally to the squirrelmail list but they said that
sorting is done server side so concluded I needed to talk to you:
=============
I feel there is an error in the logic of the sort by From column. If you
sort by this column, the messages are re-ordered in alphabetical order
using the *email address* as the sorted word.
However most people these days have their

How to achieve: Automove of mails
Dear All,
I was wondering if this is possible:
I am using namespaces to support my environment which has legacy mboxes
and new maildirs.
In it looks like:
namespace private {
separator = /
inbox = yes
prefix =
location = maildir:/home/virtual/%d/home/%n/Maildir/
}
namespace private {
separator = /
prefix = mail2/
inbox = yes
hidden = yes
location =

maildirsize quota counting locking account?
Hi,
I've just straced a dovecot imap process and found one thread sitting
there doing hundreds and hundreds of maildirsize updates as follows:
>
> open("/home/virtual/mydomain.com/home/admin/Maildir/maildirsize", O_RDWR|O_APPEND) = 7
> read(7, "10485760000S\n1562717408 107547\n-"..., 5120) = 2446

cache questions
Hi Guys,
We have:
auth_cache_size = 2048 #Kb
auth_cache_ttl = 900 #life of the cache
Seems to work well (though haven't tried looking at stats). Only problem
is that every so often, one of our new users tries to log in quickly
before the account is marked (in a db) as 'active'. They use the right
password but the sql query fails because the active flag is not yet set.

More efficient Deleting of a whole folder (or Purging Trash)
Hi,
I've straced a few dovecot processes after hitting purge on a large
Trash folder (35,000 messages). It looks like it is going through each
message, one by one, and removing (unlinking) each one.
Is there not a more efficient way to do this? If Dovecot knows the whole
folder is being deleted (ie a Trash purge), could it do something clever
with the filesystem to just remove the whole
