Changing SID on Windows boxes (plug)
...ybe you have a need to change a SID... perhaps a dual-boot box where you want the computer names and IP addresses to be the same. This is all assuming you have the proper number of software licenses, of course. If you go to the Sysinternals website ( http://www.sysinternals.com/ ) you can download NewSID, a free SID changing program. Source code is available. For more info on NewSID, go to http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/newsid.shtml I have NOT tried this software, so I can't help you use it. --Jonathan Johnson jon@sutinen.com -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following U...

Howto hide scsi or other hardware from the virtual system
Hi, I have created a virtual system via xen and would like to strip some unrequired virtual hardware from it. Example: my virtual Windows system shows me a scsi PCI device (as unknown device). I would like to get rid of it - I am only using IDE in the virtual system. How can I hide specific hardware from the virtual system? Cheers, Emre P.S.: as far as I understand specifying

known_hosts vulnerability?
Hey all, I came across a security news article, referenced by http://www.linux.org/news, at http://www.techworld.com/security/news/index.cfm?NewsID=3668 talking about an SSH weakness involving the known_hosts file. I apologize if this issue has already been addressed, but the mailing list archives didn't turn up anything when i tried searching for something relevant. So; not to knee-jerk or anything, but is anyone currently looking into t...

I wonder if this uses Wine?
http://techworld.com/opsys/news/index.cfm?NewsID=3064 The fact that they talk about Notes (the client) rather than Domino (the server) suggests that they may be running the Notes client (as I and many others do) under Linux, and the only way I know of to do this is to use Wine. David

Renaming a computer on a Samba domain
We shift computers around a lot, and therefore need to rename several whenever we get new batches of systems in. Tried simply renaming a system while on the domain, but got an "access denied" error. I WAS able to disjoin the domain, remove the LDAP entry for the computer, log in as a local administrator, rename the computer, and rejoin the domain a different computer name. However,

...y DVD offers vast improvements over VHS AND it is backwards compatible with CD's. It misses one feature consumers have grown to love though - recordablity. This missing piece stops the death of VHS. as far as DataPlay info: try this link. <http://www.digitmag.co.uk/news/display_news.cfm?NewsID=772> I cannot imagine the RIAA embracing this device unless it eliminaties all possibilty of perfect digital extraction. They will need to push for every device to provide only analog outputs for pre-recorded media and prevent PC makers from incorporating it into computers (good luck!). Myl...

Winamp security hole
...program - used to play a huge range of media files - can provide someone with system access simply by getting someone to visit a malicious website. It all has to do with how the software loads Fasttracker 2 ".xm" media files. " http://www.techworld.com/security/news/index.cfm?NewsID=1343 The fix is to get Winamp 5.03. If like me you can't bear the idea of leaving 2.x behind: 1. Right click the Winamp player, go to 'Options' and then to 'Preferences...'. 2. In the new window which loads, go to 'Plug-ins' and 'Input'. 3. Look for the inpu...

Transferring user profiles to new domain
It's been a while, but as I remember "Teach Yourself Samba in 24 Hours" by Gerald Carter and Richard Sharpe has an entire chapter which walks you through this process. ...bility, just do what native POSIX would do"? thanks! (Windows is too weird for me. We only have Windows workstations because the school administration says we have to, and we don't use their file permissions at all [We couldn't even if we wanted to because we don't bother to run `newsid` after imaging, so lots of our machines have the same SID]. I'm very glad my Windows ACLs via Samba are somehow broken, and I intend to keep it that way.) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Any docs to convert samba server to Win2003 server?
Yeah I know. Not a good question to ask on a samba newsgroup. Unfortunately for this client, the software they use requires a Windows server. Since the box is less than a year old, they do not want to purchase a second server for two applications. So, I am left with the task of converting the linux/samba server to WinBloze 2003 Server. There are only 10 workstations so if I have to unjoin

2.2 to 3.0.x PDC upgrade: an XP box no longer authenticates domain users with the Samba PDC
Hi! I've recently been upgrading a Samba 2.2 installation to 3.0 (on a SuSE 9.3 machine, specific version is 3.0.13-1.1-SuSE). Everything went more or less okay, but I'm stumped on the following problem... here's the general setup: * Samba acting as a PDC (named "servidor"). Was upgraded from 2.2 to 3.0. I copied the smb.conf file, and the
