USB Audio sound card
...What about USB Audio? I don't need 5.1 or 7.1 audio here; I'm
plugging in a Dell monitor soundbar. A quick search of the web says that yes,
these devices will work under CentOS and show up as /dev/dspX devices. So, do
devices like these:

OT: Would you purchase this hardware?
I have about $1200 to spend on 2 boxes and I'd like them to be identical.
Very basic web serving, simple HTML5 video, light email serving. Looking
around NewEgg, I come across:

These use ECC unbuffered RAM which is expensive but I did find 8gb sticks
for under $70 each:

...rocessors, and would like to use one in my
new configuration, that's not a requirement, if the most appropriate
board happens to be intel-compatible.
However, given the way ASUS is dumping LInux and crawling more firmly
into bed with the Beast, I'd prefer to avoid ASUS boards.
I see that NewEgg has some combo deals at reasonable prices, but I
can't tell which chipsets/boards are known to work with centos5 and
which aren't.
Just at random, here's one of their offerings, a Biostar board:

Motherboard recommendations
I have been building my systems with Abit IS-10 motherboards, but NewEgg has
stopped carrying them, so I need to switch to something new.
Does anyone have any recommendations on a solid motherboard that works well
with CentOS? I need a motherboard with built-in video, LAN, and SATA. I
don't need RAID or any other fancy features, just something cheap and solid.

Best use of 4 drives?
I''m putting together a NexentaOS (b65)-based server that has 4 500 GB drives on it. Currently it has two, set up as a ZFS mirror. I''m able to boot Nexenta from it, and it seems to work ok. But, as I''ve learned, the mirror is not properly redundant, and so I can''t just have a drive fail (when I pull one, the OS ends up hanging, and even if I replace it, I have to

Looking for some hardware answers, maybe someone on this list could help
...(video is not a big deal - I can
get a silent PCIe card for that, I already know one which works great)
I need 8 onboard SATA. I would prefer Intel CPU. At least one gigabit
port. That''s about it.
I built a list in that thread of all the options I found from the
major manufacturers that Newegg has as the pool of possible
chipsets/etc... any help is appreciated (anyone actually using any of
these) - and remember I''m trying to use Nevada out of the box, not
have to download specific drivers and tweak all this myself...

HD Failures
I'm just curious if any one else has noticed this. I've bought
hard drives from both Walmart and Best Buy. If I can wait, I order them
from newegg.com. I'm beginning to think that the staff at both Walmart
and Best Buy, somewhere along the supply line must dribble the drives
like basket balls. The reason I say that is all the drives I have bought
from those two places fail within a few months time. Has anyone else
noticed that? Just curio...

HP MicroServer
A bit OT, but I'm running CentOS-5.6 on this machine
(in fact on two of them)
and it seems to run perfectly -
I've had no problems at all.
Except that I'd like to add a second ethernet port,
and am not sure where one can find a card that will fit this machine.
As far as I can see, it requires a half-height PCIe card,
which seems to be rather a rare animal.

SATA controler req
Hello,
I'm looking for a recomendation for a SATA controlers. In the range of 4-8
ports, either PCI or PCIe (for desktop use) and/or PCI-X, PCIe (for server
use). I'd especially like it if the Linux driver was already in CentOS or
easily added. Everytime I find something interesting, a google search shows up
either the drivers is for 2.6.30 (ie, not CentOS), someone tried it and it was

The above adaptor is based on the Realtek RTL8188CUS chipset and uses
the rtl8192cu kernel driver.

USB-3.0 on C6.5 ??
Just wondering if there are any known issues with USB 3.0 storage devices
in Centos 6.5??
I just got one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817332028
it does either esata or USB 3.0. My new motherboard (ASUS M5A99X EVO
R2.0) supports both, so I've tried both (of course, can't have a feature
without at least giving it a whirl! :)). esata seems to work fine,
I can copy gigs 'n gigs of data...

Cheap ZFS homeserver.
So after toying around with some stuff a few months back I got bogged down and set this project aside for a while. Time to revisit.

Looking around there still is not a good "these cards/motherboards" work list. the HCL is hardly ever updated, and its far more geared towards business use than hobbyist/home use. So bearing all of that in mind I will need the

That is a nice looking unit but pricey. They are $867 with no drives on
Newegg.
Think I'm going with the TS140. My TS130 has been pretty solid. I can get
one w/o a HD, Xeon processor, for under $400.
I tried installing freenas as a vm on virtualbox last night for a test run
and got into a loop of reboots. I followed the directions in their
documentation. Never got it w...
