R (&stats) newcomer.... help!
Hi all,
I hope that i've posted this in the correct place. if not, please accept my
apologies (where should this go?)
I have carried out experimental removal of bivalves at 2 intertidal shores.
Bivalves were removed by raking of surface sediments. I wish compare the

Splitting the list
I've changed the heading because this really is another thread. I
think it inevitable that there will, in the course of time, be other
lists that are devoted, in some shape or form, to the concerns of
practitioners (at all levels) who are using R. One development I'd
not like to see is fracture along application area lines, allowing
those who are comfortable in coteries whose

example package for devel newcomers
Hi,
I'd like to know whether there is a package (or more, of course) regarded
as a good example that could be used also as an instructional tool for
newcomers to R extensions development.
Thanks.

Why use 'Answer'?
Why is it that newcomers always feel like inserting 'Answer' is a
necessary step in their extension.conf entries?

For newcomers to the mailing list.
1. Don't top post.
2. Don't hijack another thread with new unrelated info.
3. Trim your responses.
4. Turn off html in your mail client.
5. Try and do some basic google searches on your problem.

Hoping to contribute
Hello everyone. My 'wikiname' is JariJaakkola.
I have a desire to be able to contribute to the CentOS community
in some way.
So, I am proposing a page that would be called a 'Newcomer's Checklist'.
I feel the location of such page could best be decided by someone else
as
it would at least depend on the quality/usefulness of the page.
Thank you,
Jari

Using data frames for EDA: Insert, Change name, delete columns? (Newcomer's question)
I am finding complex analyses easier than some elementary operations in
R. In particular I want to do some low level exploratory data analyses
with data in a data frame but cannot find commands to easily insert,
remove (delete), rename, and re-order (arbitrarily, not sort) columns.
I see that the micEcon package has an insertCol command, but that is for
matrices, not data frames. I have looked

R Optimization 101 for R Newcomers: An extended example
To new R-Programmers:
This long-winded note gives an example of optimizing in R that should
only be of interest to newcomers to the language. Others should ignore.
My hope is that it might help illuminate some basic notions of code
improvement, looping, and vectorization in R. However, I welcome
comments from anyone that enlarge, correct, or improve it. I remain a
novice R programmer.

NoMethodError in Unit Test - Rails Newcomer
I''m working on user authentication system to get familiar with rails,

Is this really a good idea? I'm not going to argue at length
about it, but it is worth thinking about.
The only practical downsides of void are when newcomers take C's
syntax for functions with no arguments a little

Some documentation suggestions as of v.5.10
Hello,
Here are some humble suggestions for 'doc/menu.txt' and
'doc/syslinux.txt'. They might be relevant for other documentation
sources too.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to prepare adequate patches.
For 'menu.txt':
_ Line 8:
"located in the menu/ subdirectly."
Suggestion:
"located in the 'com32/cmenu' subdirectory."

Newcomer perceived problems with AAF/Ferret
I blogged about some of the problems with aaf in production
(http://www.jroller.com/BrightCandle) yesterday but inspired by the
poitive response I thought I would share the perceived problems and
discuss some of the potential solutions to help newcomers and make aaf
work as if by magic just like Rails does.
All of these problems boil down to one simple problem, running acts as

[LLVMdev] win32/llvm.sln, win32/clang.sln
Hi Steve,
The Visual Studio solution and project files are quite handy. CMake creates
absolute paths instead of relative paths, making it cumbersome to move
things around. Also, for newcomers (e.g. students) it's really great to be
able to download the package, open the solution and compile without any
complication.
They haven't been updated in a while, but it would be nice to have

New to asterisk? RUN... don't walk.
As a newcomer to Asterisk, you will not be welcomed
with open arms. First, you will find almost no
documentation on it's features. Second, if you try to
ask questions, you will be flamed and pointed to
worthless how-tos and 'the wiki'. These worthless
documents can only be useful for explaining how things
work to those already in-the-know. Lastly, Asterisk
is so bug ridden, expect
