/home on BTRFS on SSD, now highly fragmenting virtuoso database - use autodefrag?

gwenview WITHOUT nepomuk
Does anyone know how to make gwenview *not* try to use nepomuk? I liked it under 5.x, but in 6.x it *constantly* complains about things like tagging is not enabled... but won't open, when I log in, with gwenview running and showing the same picture I'd logged out on. Then there are the random crashes.... Don't need a "semantic" desktop,...

BTRFS fails defragging
Hi folks, I''m using Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal with # uname -r 3.5.0-24-generic And it seems I cannot defrag : # filefrag /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-24-generic /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-24-generic: 3 extents found # btrfs filesystem defrag /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-24-generic # echo $? 20 # filefrag /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-24-generic /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-24-generic: 3 extents found Any clue

Status of Windows Search Protocol support in Samba?
...n-trivial effort. Oddly enough, perhaps, I'd have thought that one of the hardest parts would be interfacing with a host's index/search tool and figuring out how to degrade sensibly if there is no compatible tool. On Linux operating systems (and perhaps BSD too, not sure), Tracker, Baloo, Nepomuk (on old installations), Beagle (on yet older installations), or Recoll might need to be interface targets. Presumably Spotlight on Mac allows querying by API but I know nothing of it. And Windows Search on Windows does allow querying by multiple APIs but, in practice, would be the lowest priority t...

picture viewers
Ok, I give up. After the last month or so, gwenview takes literally five minutes or so to come up, gagging because I have nepomuk turned off in kde. Today, it just will not come up at all, even trying gwenview pic.jpg. Are there any other ->light weight<- image viewers in the standard repositories, including epel? I DO NOT WANT OR NEED a "semantic desktop" (aka bloat, suitable for people who have no knowledge...

About using Dovecot indexes with Thunderbird/kmail
...ers I use and how they make use of Dovecot. I have Thunderbird on my laptop and KMail2 on my desktop. Dovecot indexes. GOOD! The trouble is that the mail readers want their own indexes :-( I wish that Thunderbird would NOT index mail on my laptop, but it does. I wish Kmail2 would not use nepomuk/akonadi to index the mail but it does. Why can't they both believe the indexes used by Dovecot? Is this an unreasonable request? -- "We stand behind all of our products, except for the manure spreader." -- Corporate motto of an equipment manufacturer

Status of Windows Search Protocol support in Samba?
...Elasticsearch is probably an ideal server-side indexing solution. On the other hand, if one is querying a desktop box (which is still a valid use case for WSP) then it would make more sense to query into whatever the user is already running (e.g. Tracker on Gnome, Baloo on KDE, Recoll on anything, Nepomuk on old KDE, and so on). However, I appreciate that this is all easier said than done. May I ask, is the index/search integration modular? What I mean is: Would it be possible/feasible to create a plugin structure that allowed third parties to create a plugin for an arbitrary indexing/search tool?...

Status of Windows Search Protocol support in Samba?
I've been trying to Google this but have not found any definitive answers. Does Samba currently support Windows Search Protocol[1]? I did find these lecture slides from a few years ago (five years?) but they don't tell me about the current status: https://sambaxp.org/archive_data/SambaXP2015-SLIDES/wed/track1/sambaxp2015-wed-track1-Noel_Power-WindowSearchProtocolAndSamba.pdf (by Noel
