Brandwidth for making internet calls
My ADSL connection speed is 512Kb up and 128Kb down.
When making calls from Asterisk to IAX and back to the Asterisk, the
sound is choppy and 20% of voice messages was lost. What is the
production bandwidth requirement per internet call. I understand there
is no guarantee of QoS but at least a benchmark to follow.

ssh allowing root logins
I have a problem w/ OpenSSH allowing root logins even though the
PermitRootLogin directive in the conf file is set to "no". I double and
triple checked that it was using the file I was editing with strings and
just by adding a bogus line and sshd complaining about it. I then grabbed
the latest source and built 3.6p1. It has the same problem. The host is
running solaris 2.6. Anyone have

Xten - Free windows SIP client
Same here Michael and the PocketPC version seems unaudible with any codec; early days trying that though.

SAN Devices
Anyone out there using small-midsized (2-4 TB) SAN solution among
multiple Asterisk systems? I don't have the budget for an EMC-caliber
solution, and can't seem to find much else out there.
Thanks,
Adam

NT profiles on samba server
Hi, there,
I put roaming profiles for NT4 users on samba server.
In "Domain User Manager", I set "User profile Path" \\abel\profile\%U.pds,
here abel is samba server.
It works well, but everyday several users complain. Sometime, they cannot login because of
roaming profiles. Sometimes, some users cannot run VC or VB.
Sometime, I only need to remove ntuser.dat on samba

open and euid security flaw in 5.0-Current?
On a FreeBSD 5.0 the behaviour of screen when connecting to other
users sessions have changed. Previously:
1. login as userA start a screen as userA and disconnect
2. login as root su - userA "screen -r"
3. result failure as userA cant access the ttyX with such a message
Current:
1. login as userA start a screen as userA and disconnect
2. login as root su - userA "screen -r"

I need a second opinion on a new phone system deployment
...hese connections will be forced to 10BaseT
at the switch.
I require PoE to the wire closets, no power sourced at the desktop. I
require a minimum eight-hours emergency power which will be in the form
of UPS in most cases. Why so much backup? Well if you ask, we can start
a new discussion about NEBS compliance, E911 Federal, local, and state
requirements, etc... etc...
So why not use existing data network? The current data network consists
primarily of 10+ year-old 100BaseT switches, no PoE. Barely any backup
power. I don't believe they're using QoS. The network office is a

Is Asterisk really good??
So this is just a general question, Is Asterisk really good?
Reliability?
Functionality?
Customization's?
I am coming from a Nortel world, were you pay for everything, and you
can't delve into the software. But it seems that customization would be
a great thing.
Like, setting up a war-dialer to customer lists, incoming/outgoing
faxes (that's possible with Asterisk, right?) and

serious networking (em) performance (ggate and NFS) problem
Dear best guys,
I really love 5.3 in many ways but here're some unbelievable transfer rates,
after I went out and bought a pair of Intel GigaBit Ethernet Cards to solve
my performance problem (*laugh*):
(In short, see *** below)
Tests were done with two Intel GigaBit Ethernet cards (82547EI, 32bit PCI
Desktop adapter MT) connected directly without a switch/hub and "device

Problems with write-behind with large files on Gluster 3.8.4
Hello,
I'm having problems when write-behind is enabled on Gluster 3.8.4.
I have 2 Gluster servers each with a single brick that is mirrored between
them. The code causing these issues reads two data files each approx.
128G in size. It opens a third file, mmap()'s that file, and
subsequently reads and writes to it. The third file, on sucessful runs
(without write-behind enabled)

Please note that Windows 9x clients are not true members
of a domain for reasons outlined in this article. Therefore
the protocol for support Windows 9x style domain logons is
completely different from NT4 domain logons and has been
officially supported for some time.
Did you read this document? Let me know what needs to
be updated and i will take care of it.

netcdf
Hi All,
I'm very knew to R. I downloaded and am running it on my redhat so
that I can use the clim.pact package. Everything is downloaded and
installed correctly. When trying to read a netcdf file from the
NCEP/NCAR reanalysis dataset using retrieve.nc I keep getting errors
that the number of dimensions are wrong.
If I use
x.1 <- retrieve.nc("geopothgt.nc")
I get the above

iLBC, Speex and X-Lite
I've been trying out the newest X-Lite (Build 1012) with iLBC and speex
codecs.
If I enable only iLBC _or_ SPX on X-Lite and call the echo-test on my
asterisk server, the call connects, but I get no sound.
If I enable only iLBC _and_ SPX, X-Lite indicated that it has connected
with iLBC, and I hear a weird squawking.
My sip.conf contains:
allow=iLBC
allow=SPEEX
allow=gsm

iaxComm - IAX client for Win32
iaxclient.sourceforge.net is the home of Steve Kann's crossplatform port of the
iax library.
iaxComm is a client written in c++ using wxWindows. There is a Win32 binary on
the site. I think that it should be compilable on Linux and MacOSX, but can't
test it.
Feedback is welcome.

LGPL IAX2 software phone (for WIndows/Linux platforms)
I don't want to rain on Dan's parade, but I'd like to call everyone's attention
to an existing project.
Steve Kann has developed a crossplatform IAX/IAX2 library, and there are a few
clients available for it.
I have written iaxComm using the wx toolkit. It compiles and runs under Windows
XP using the MinGW tool chain. A precompiled IAX only version is available at
