WINS (NBMD) server only
To replace failing Windows Server, I configured the Linux one.
The two services I need are DNS and WINS, so I installed Bind9 and Samba.
But I see that Samba is far from compact, its installation requires Perl + Python. I do not need to share resources with shis server too. In result, I got 900M on HDD.
Are there a way to install NMBD only? Without (or with as least as possible) extra packets.

Samba AD member - how to force sync AD attributes?
...ouldn't getent query the DC directly? Instead, it
seems to access some cached information that, in this specific case, is no
longer valid. If that's the case, can I somehow flush the cache or speed up
the synchronization? I tried reloading the configuration, restarting all
components (smbd, nbmd, winbind), all to no avail.
By the way, wbinfo shows the correct, updated information.

And I have verified I am typing in the correct password.
So it looks like there is some problem with encryption or something.
smbd and nbmd are version 2.9999 (Debian packages)
Thanks.

New Samba User please help me!
...kgroup = WORKGROUP" But when i'm in Windows95, and i
goto DOS PROMPT (The computer is called COMP3, but its ip is
192.168.0.2) i type "NET VIEW" it only shows:
SErvername REmark
//COMP3 COMP3
But it dosen't show anything from the linux box! Smb and NBMd starts
automatically upon the boot of Linux and i don't know what's wrong.. I"m
really frustrated and the manual pages in samba are very hard to
understand. If somebody can please shed light in this subject for me, it
would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

Can't get view samba 3.0 server via winXP, using domain security
...results happen even if I turn iptables off completely.
3. log.xpclient file is returning the following error everytime I try
to connect from the XP client:

auth/auth_util.c:make_server_info_info3(1017)
make_server_info_info3: pdb_init_sam failed!
log.smbd and log.nbmd show normal starts and restarts, no errors,
no access denies, so I'm pretty sure that hosts allow in the smb.conf is
not a problem.
4. here's my smb.conf file:

Guest access broken for Win7 between 3.3.8 and 3.5.4?
...havior when I upgrade to
samba3x-3.5.4. (Staying at 3.3.8 is not optimal because I am in an
environment where I need to keep up-to-date with CVEs.) If I
authenticate via the guest uname/pwd, I am also able to connect -- just not
as an unknown user.
Of possible relevance is that I'm not running nbmd, which I haven't need
to-date.
The change log for the latest samba3x package mentions that SPNEGO parsing
was fixed between the two releases and I'm wondering if that could be
implicated.
Any thoughts?

Must put "server role check:inhibit = yes" in smb.conf
Hello,
We have followed the migration from samba4.2 to samba4.6 from
"http://samba.2283325.n4.nabble.com/Debian-Jessie-samba-4-5-8-2-4-5-10-4-6-5-available-td4719912.html"
(van-belle)
But we must put in smb.conf this instruction : "server role
check:inhibit = yes".
if not, nmbd fails to start.
Why ?

...9) respsonding to the
Samba server (192.168.1.102) with a name query response to port 137
Frame 3 shows the Samba Server linux system sending out an ICMP
destination unreachable message for port 137.
This packet sequence is repeatable and I see it many times
in the traces
To me this seems like NBMD
is not listening on port 137. If so How can I fix
given all the other steps I've taken?
