What does this mean?

Invoking par(mfrow...) on an already subdivided plot
I'd like to generate on a single device multiple plots, each of which
contains two plots. Essentially, I've got sub-plots which consist of
two tracks, the upper one displaying gene expression data, and the
lower one mapping position. I'd like to display four of these
two-track sub-plots on one device, but I can't seem to invoke the
par(mfrow=...) or layout(matrix(...)) functions at

analyzing suvival data using splines (a.k.a., piecewise log-hazard-ratio models)
I'm looking for software that makes plots such as fig 4 (a)-(e), fig 5 anf fig 7

Applications to Breast Cancer Prognosis," 1992, J Am Stat Assoc, pp 942-51.
In other words, I'm looking for software that takes survival data and a
continuous
covariate as input and computes a curve giving log hazard

...hould be based on intended application and perhaps the fact it
is my pension, not my university, which now finances my research.
My most demanding applications are R, Xlispstat, S(ancient vanilla 2.0) and my
own ad hoc f77 (and ratfor) programs. I do Monte Carlo multivariate models of
quantitative multigenic phenomena with significant genetic-environmental
interactions and compare the results both numerically and graphically with
data-banked empirical data. On my present system an optimized fortran run takes
about three days.
Suggestions keep pointing me toward an Intel box with a PC disc partition f...
