Theora and software patents
...precision/range Skipped P-frame macroblocks Macroblock prediction IP frame followed by another P field (wtf?) Possibly anything else relation to motion estimation or quantization. In addition, I expect there are patents covering the loop filter used in Theora; however these don't overlap with mpeg1/2 so they weren't part of my original claim. Feel free to research the above patents on your own. I will not do it because it's not worth my time, nor worth 'tainting' myself or whatever nonsense people think reading a patent does. Anyway, my impression in reading the Theora spec...

Quality of vp3.2 codec?
How good is the video compression in vp3.2? For example, how does it compare (bit rate & quality) to mpeg1, mpeg2, Divx, real Video 8+, Windows Media, etc. etc. It being open source is nice and all, but if it can't be reasonably competitive then there isn't much point to it. I just haven't seen anything that compares vp32 to anything else. (Although to be honest, I haven't seen much on...

Real hardware for opus
vorbis, mpeg1 layer 3 and more have special hardware support in audio players widely available but I can't find anything for opus. Is there any? If you try to use opus for music on the go it's a requirement to have for long battery life isn't it?

Ready for real use?
Hi all, I've been following Theora's progress for a while as the company I work for is looking at replacing the use of the MPEG1 codec with a royalty free alternative. I have evaluated Theora and I think in its current state it is quite close to doing to job as oppose to Dirac which still has a very long way to go. What I would like to ask is how far from 1.0 is Theora? I see periodic updates here and there and in my own te...

...ow. When I used MainActor to encode that same dv format clip into mpeg2 format, it took about 2 minutes and 50 seconds, the resulting file was 25.3 MBytes, and both the audio and video were close to the quality of the dv format file. When I used MainActor to encode that same dv format clip into mpeg1 format, it took about 2 minutes and 20 seconds, the resulting file was 10.9 MBytes, and the audio was good while the video has not as sharp as the mpeg2 version. I've got a 750 MHz AMD Duron with 128 MBytes of RAM. There was a message when running encode that said compiling mplayer without...

Create CD from avi files
I have avi files in xVid format from my Camera, and I want to create a Video CD that can be viewed on any CD player. I have searched through the various repos (including rpmforage and kbsingh) and did not find anything that would burn. I have a number of programs that have no trouble displaying these files. Including xzine, Avidemux, and VideoLAN-Client). I unfortunately have to make these

Thusnelda Video Quality
Wow. Let me say that again, just in case you missed it. Wow. The quality looks to be on par with what I get out of H.264, but Theora has the added benefit of free and open source software with no patent worries so I can use it with a clean conscience. Thanks, everyone.

TMpeg and Wine
Hello! Under wine - dosen't matter if I use the original Windows as guest windows or if I use a fake-windows - TMpeg can't find any installed codec. Even of I only want to convert a MPEG1 file (for example NTSC-VCD to Pal-VCD) it says "File "C:\...... can not open, or unsupported." Anyone who uses TMepg under Linux? Any ideas? Or any alternative Software, that runs? Thanks for answer Andreas Ritter

Real hardware for opus
The vast majority of audio players do *not* have special hardware for MP3 and Vorbis. Decoding audio is so cheap that there's no reason to bother with the trouble of having a dedicated hardware for it. Video Codecs, Video Editing and Wine
...msvideo.dll and msrle32.dll as "video codecs" and the "Wine Developer's Guide" describes msvfw32.dll as a "32-bit windows video system." With the knowlege that I gained about MPEG2 codecs, is it a good assumption to say that the dll's I just mentioned are MPEG1 codecs? The "Wine Developer's Guide" describes d3d*.dll as "DriectX/Direct drawing libraries." I have concluded that d3d8 would imply DirectX8. Is that correct? The [mci] portion of the wine system.ini file contains the line: MPEGVideo2=mciqtz.drv Is this an MPEG2 code...
