Samba4 changing a user's password from linux workstation
...the way ? No idea, we do not produce > sssd, can I suggest asking on the sssd-users mailing list. > > Rowland I've gotten pretty unhappy with "realmd" and "sssd". They try to hide a lot of steps away from the user, but the internal interactions are a bit of a "mousetrap" game. When it works, you get the mouse. But if any of the many steps are even slightly worn, it becomes erratic or fails.

Flexible data schema in a database?
I figured I pose this to the list and see if any one can build a better mousetrap. The problem: 1. Store hierarchical data in a database, but without knowing the hierarchy beforehand. 2. Allow the user to define there own hierarchy, and allow the system to support multiple hierarchies. Call it a cataloging system, we have an object and we want to add data about that object to...

ttyv for local only?
I get this in my security postings. Jun [undisclosed time] [undiscl.] login: 2 LOGIN FAILURES ON ttyv2 Jun [undisclosed time] [undiscl.] login: 2 LOGIN FAILURES ON ttyv2, qmaild As it turns out, I'm not running qmail :) And if I did, it would definitely have a nologin shell. But that's beside the point- I have had a perception that ttyv was for local/console logins, and that just

the future of markdown, according to whom?
...true if the effort is led by people like atwood and/or greenspan. they are highly skilled, to be sure, and deserve kudos for calling out the need, but this kind of thing needs to be headed by someone like john macfarlane (who knows the issues down cold) or fletcher penny (who has built the better mousetrap). nobody else has the _gravitas,_ in my humble opinion. but seriously, even with that, i still think it's too late. and even if it's not, there is some question (in my mind) whether markdown even _deserves_ to be saved. really. markdown is a sloppy implementation (by john gruber) of a...

Re: Re: Re: Buffer Overflows: A Summary
...s inside the jail, blam. Another useful technique for escaping from chroot jails is to use the network. (For example, forge RPC, rlogin, NFS requests to localhost; etc.) But! Get this -- ptrace() and its cousins can be used for good! One can use ptrace-like mechanisms to construct up a better mousetrap,er, jail. The idea is to have a warden which traces the jailed process, receives an upcall each time the jailed process tries to do a system call, and validates that syscall against the security policy. This approach lets you control not just filesystem accesses, but also all other privileges (e.g...

here's the thing that tips the scale
ok, i waited for 2 weeks, and still no votes -- none! -- on whether my posts are sufficiently on-topic, or not... and that basically confirms what i suspected all along, which is that no one really cares one way or the other. even the guys who put up the bitchy posts are probably just having a bad day, and they don't have a dog to kick, and the wife made 'em stop smoking herb, so they

Programming an unlocked ADSI phone?
What kind of channelbank/FXS port are you connecting to? I've seen problems connecting to some of the older versions of the Adtran Total Access 750's. I wouldn't doubt there would be problems on other channelbanks with older firmwares. Of course, no firmware on CAC AB1's I have the AAstra 480, Adtran 750 Channelbank (updated firmware), T100P card, and it worked fine on the

Comparison of SAS & R/Splus
I am one of only 5 or 6 people in my organization making the effort to include R/Splus as an analysis tool in everyday work - the rest of my colleagues use SAS exclusively. Today, one of them made the assertion that he believes the numerical algorithms in SAS are superior to those in Splus and R -- ie, optimization routines are faster in SAS, the SAS Institute has teams of excellent numerical
