Moaning dog...
...airman found: 1. The dog was tied to the telephone system's ground wire via a steel chain and collar. 2. The wire connection to the ground rod was loose. 3. The dog was receiving voltage of signaling current when the phone number was called. 4. After a couple of such jolts, the dog would start moaning and then urinate on himself and the ground. The wet ground would complete the circuit, thus causing the phone to ring. Which demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing and moaning.

Google Earth - displays nothing, moans about graphics card
I have installed Google Earth under wine 0.9.5, using winetools 0.9jo-III. I believe it is going quite well - it tells me I have an unrecognised graphics card and asks me to log in when the form appears. The program appears and, since installing the mozilla ActiveX , just sits there with nothing showing in the main display area. I am wondering if it is possible for me to get any further. --

samba 3 b3 and nt accounts
Okidokey things are flying here However I am a domain admin and as such when I logon to a win 2k/xp system I should be able to access the system stuff (like changing the domain) as well as certify a new machine to the domain. With the Samba user however I log onto the machine now and no longer have my admin rights to change settings :c( (I hate this quirk of xp/2k it's almost enough reason

validates_presence_of
I am just going through the book and I come across a problem with the code in the app/models: validates_format_of :image_url, :with => %r{^http:.+\.(gif|jpg|png)$}i, :message => "must be a URL for a GIF, JPG, or PNG image" It seems to moan when it''s empty even though I removed :image_url from validates_presence_of. How should I make it optional?

Ugh on new bios.
Just so others know. On my EVGA motherboard the option to boot removable media didn't work on my usb flash drive with syslinux on it. Yesterday I tried updating the version of syslinux and seeing if that would wok. Frustrated with it not working I moaned and groaned and my brother decided to look for options in the bios that I might have missed. He couldn't find anything. But I decided to

AppDB Voting System Wierdness
Hi, I'm a newbie. I was looking at the AppDB and I think the voting is a great idea to prioritise what people want and will use. However, I was looking at my favorite game that I want to get fully working on wine - "Company of Heroes (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=4506)". I can't understand why there isn't a global voting for this like

...esponse to a request. prettyR has finally learned how to display SPSS value labels in the xtab and brkdn functions if they are there. I would like to know if anyone finds a problem with this feature as it took some time to pick the low-hanging bugs out of it. Remember, it is your whingeing and moaning that have helped to make these packages what they are today. Jim

AVM B1 and PTP mode
Hi ! I've fetched a spare AVM B1 card from the cellar, and installed it. After "modprobe b1pci" I did "capiinit" and capiinit moaned about a missing t1.b4. So I search the web and found one at http://www.avm.de/ftp/cardware/b1/x_misc/ddi/. When I now look at the controller, I finally see p2p-mode: # cat /proc/capi/controllers/1 name b1pciv4-a400 io

Problem with '#' key recognition
...ise the '#' key being pressed to acknowledge an incoming call from a queue. No matter how many times I press the key to acknowledge, the Asterisk server acts as if I have not. I have installed the ztdummy module, and it seems that Asterisk is picking it up OK (mainly since it's not moaning about permissions for IAX timing any more). I am using the Asterisk version that is packaged in Debian Stable (Asterisk 1.0.7-BRIstuffed-0.2.0-RC7k) and the call that goes out expecting a '#' goes over an IAX provider to a UK mobile/landline. I have Googled on the subject but can't...

Files with / in their name....
Hi there - I am trying to do a site to site nightly rsync between two boxes using ssh - all of the setup steps work and everything can talk nicely etc. However, the users unfortunately have lots of files with / in the filename (eg 21/08/08.ppt etc.) - when I try and run rsync on the content of these folders rsync understandably moans about the filenames being invalid (ie it thinks they are folder

SMS 2003 and Samba
Hi, I was wondering if anyone has played with Microsoft's SMS 2003? I've got a Samba 3 PDC using an LDAP backend, and a Windows 2003 server running SMS 2003. The SMS 2003 setup moans that it cannot verify the service account in the domain. Its reasons are it cannot connect to the domain as either the user account does not have access to the domain or the domain controller is down. I know

Sharing GDI printers
Hi guys, Can someone explain why sharing a GDI printer (think Laserjet 1000/1005/1020 for example) is so unreliable? I'm not moaning about Samba - I just want to understand. I have seen this several times. I get the printer working fine under Linux, then print to it through Samba, also fine. But then I get a call a day later "we can't print" and when I get there the printer is paused (an no user has the privs to...
