Power calculation using pwr.t.test()
...size of d=0.28 (cohen's d) for a
difference between two independent groups (alpha level should be 0.05 and
the effect should be detected with 80% probability).
The results from the code below indicates that I would need n=400 subjects
(200 in each group). This is seems so incredibly high that I mistrust my
results & wanted to ask whether I miscalculated n?
library(pwr)
pwr.t.test(d=0.28,sig.level=0.05,power=0.8,type="two.sample",alternative="two.sided")
Many thanks for you help!

Postfix 2.6.5 in CentOSplus?
Hi folks,
according to several findings on the web I tried to find postfix-2.6.5
in centosplus adding this to my /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo:
[base]
exclude=postfix
[centosplus]
includepkgs=postfix
in the right places.
But when I "yum remove" and "yum install" postfix then, it's "only"
2.3.3-2.1 with added mysql/pqsql support.

My test script on RHEL 7.1 creates that even if I could make it smaller
as the kernel + initrd fits in less than 32 MB. So let me make that try
first !

rsync --link-dest and --files-from lead by a "change list" from some file system audit tool (Was: Re: cut-off time for rsync ?)
...n and off, about
this for a while and I always get stuck.
I use rsync with --link-desk as a backup tool. For various reasons, this
is not something I want to give up. But, esp. for some very large file
systems, doing something that avoids the scan would be desirable.
I should also add that I mistrust time-stamp, and even time-stamp+file-
size, mechanism for detecting changes. Checksums, on the other hand, are
prohibitively expensive for backup of large file systems.
These both bring me to the idea of using some file system auditing
mechanism to drive - perhaps with an --include-from or --fi...

Excell files clobbered by Samba log files
...o be right in the middle of a file transaction when it was restarted,
would it scribble on the file? At this point, I'm assuming that it
is never safe to restart the daemons with users connected, but it
would be nice if someone could explain the damage I'm seeing. My
users are fearful and mistrustful of anything that's not Microsoft.
Thanks!

samba on SLES 10: binding problem
Greets, samba-users,
I try to find a solution for the following situation:
We run samba on a SLES10 SP3 server (32bit). All the SLES-updates are in ...
The server started to show problems with CUPS, cupsd just stopped
working out of the blue and had to be restarted. No specific errors were
logged. I wrote a small script to watchdog that daemon and restart it

cut-off time for rsync ?
You could use find to build a filter to use with rsync, then update the
filter every few days if it takes too long to create.
I have used a script to build a filter on the source server to exclude
anything over 5 days old, invoked when the sync starts, but it only
parses around 2000 files per run.

Apologies, I thought I was following exactly that sentence and trying to
make a minimal post that would waste as little developer bandwidth as
possible given the lack of a better system.
Anyway, I have been using R for like forever (20 years).
In my current project, I have run into problems with stack overflows in R's
dendrogram code when trying to use either str() or as.hclust() on very

Upgrade to CentOS 7.6 with centos-xen-48 enabled
Just to answer my own question, I solved this by installing
yum-plugin-priorities
and setting priority=10 to centos-virt-xen-48 repository.
Yum doesn't consider the libvirt packages from CentOS base/updates anymore
after this.
Sorry for the noise,
