Wine/Interix -- The pros and cons.
I was thinking about running Wine on Interix (the POSIX layer of
Microsoft's Services for Unix). There are a few apparent unknows:
Would Wine load the .dll.so's? Since Interix uses PE for it's native
format (running on Windows, duh), Would Wine load the .dll.so's? Would
it reject them being in PE format and having the 'POSIX Layer' attribute
set, or could we hack on a

Slow at loading large folder tree
The thing is, on the same machine, same net same moment, when I load
the same folder from windows XP (through parallels) it takes like
10sec while samba 10min!!!
MTU is 1500, set to match 100T devices like router and NAS on the
LAN. Even on crossover cable it freaks out the same way.
Btw my NAS is a Lacie Ethernet drive with linux based firmware and
samba. Funny enough I load folders (ie

IMAP From sort uses only local-part
As far as I can tell, when I ask Dovecot to sort an IMAP mailbox by the
>From address, it ignores the part of the address after the '@'. So, for
instance, mails from info at abc.org, info at xyz.org, and info at ghi.org are
all mingled together in arrival order.
Is there a way to change this? Thanks!

Best practices in developing package: From a single file

documentation are very close together. I think mingling code and
documentation in the same file does add a subtle pressure to write
shorter docs, but I'm not entirely sure that's a bad thing - for long
form writing, vignettes are a much better solution anyway (since you
often want to mingle code and explanation).
Personally, I don't find writing in comments any harder than writing
in .Rd files, especially now that you can write in markdown and have
it automatically translated to Rd formatting commands. And on the
negative side of Rd, I find it frustrating to have to copy and pas...

Could be. However, I think editing comments in a .R file is a bit
harder than editing text in a .Rd file, so I think the format
discourages editing. I think it does

Managing Feature Backlogs
What techniques and tools do you use to manage your feature backlogs?
It could be as low tech as a post-it note, TODO file in your Rails
project tree, or as high tech as a web-based collaborative tool.
Thanks,

I agree about your first point to some extent, but it works best when
the documentation is short. Once you get a long help page, you still
have the long distance. Some functions need long help pages because
they do a lot.
RStudio provides pretty good support for both f...

RoR - Mac OS 10.4.4 on Intel
I got a new 20 inch iMac dual core today and am busy getting it all
setup. A couple of issues though:
1. Is the Ruby 1.8.2 install by Apple still botched or has that been
fixed? I recall someone had fixed the rbconfig.rb to get it working.
Is this something I still have to do?
2. Does anyone know if Locomotive is using the uniersal binaries, or is
it targetting PPC yet? I couldn''t

hotuser and hotkernel
G''Day Folks,
While I have a few minutes online (which is rare at the moment - travel),
let me post about a couple of new scripts. I''ve just uploaded them to
http://www.brendangregg.com/dtrace.html.
They are to profile user-level functions and libaries; and kernel-level
functions and modules. They sample, rather than trace (which can be both
good and bad). Here is hotuser

Testing problems in Rails
Hello, everyone.
I start using Rails to develop a little project and I have some concerns
while I''m practising TDD.
* In rails, it seems very common to functional testing contoller without
unit testing it, and the unit tests and DAO tests of models are mingled in
the "unit test" of model under test/model. I used to seperate the unit tests
and DAO tests because in unit tests we don''t have to load any data into the
database which will make unit tests faster to run. And I am willing to unit
test controller but I haven''t found a...
