Losing definition on the midrange on latest encoders
...e that quality with a lower bitrate." I would disagree with this. I think the developers have made some poor choices of late and the latest encoders are worse than earlier ones. Basically they allocate much more of bandwidth to the very high treble than they used to which shortchanges the midrange - even at the highest bitrates they never allocate very much bandwidth to the midrange. Yes the highs are a little crisper, but I don't think it was worth losing definition in the midrange where our hearing is more accute. Unfortunately it takes much more bit-bandwidth to improve the trebl...

Samba, Mac and IBM Midrange
We are currently trying to access an IBM AS/400 (iSeries) system with a Mac system running OS X. We have setup a share drive thru the AS/400's NetServer. We have successfully connected to the shared drive but all characters in are not legible. Looks like the code page is not set correctly, also when we click on an object it disappears from the screen. Is there additional configurations steps

c55x dsp
hi, am trying speex on TI c54x dsp. does anyone has any idea whether we can make both the coder AND decoder run in about 10ms for a 20ms frame for this dsp, looking at narrowband, no VAD/CNG/VBR, using a low complexity, say 1, for a midrange bitrate, say 15kbps? was the c55 dsp able to run real-time on speex for the above configuration? can someone share their timings? tia! oh yes, just downloaded the latest revision, rev 9080 i think line 472 lsp.c else if (xout1 + xout2 < -SHL(32766,8)) should read else if...

ulimit -n in start-script
Hi! Even on midrange-systems it's necessary to set "ulimit -n" to a higher value then the system default of 1024. I'd prefer having this already prepared: In /etc/defaults/dovecot we should add: # Set amount of "open files" / ulimit -n ULIMIT_OPEN_FILES=16884 In /etc/init.d/dovecot we...

SAN arrays with NVRAM cache : ZIL and zfs_nocacheflush
Hi, I read some articles on solarisinternals.com like "ZFS_Evil_Tuning_Guide" on http://www.solarisinternals.com/wiki/index.php/ZFS_Evil_Tuning_Guide . They clearly suggest to disable cache flush http://www.solarisinternals.com/wiki/index.php/ZFS_Evil_Tuning_Guide#FLUSH . It seems to be the only serious article on the net about this subject. Could someone here state on this

Greetings, first remarks about trying to do customizable drop-shadows
...orners. If I have the shadow-textures overlap a bit inwards it might look funny if the windows opacity changes to transparent. Right now the only solution for this is to fill the inner part of the drop-shadow with a rectangle having the start-color. But this solution causes heavy overdraw. While my midrange GeForce might deal with this happily I don't know how e.g. integrated graphic-chips from intel on shared memory can deal with the bandwidth issues that might arise from such an approach. What's your opinion on this? BTW, did I make myself clear enough or should I gimp up a quick schematic...

Vorbis is low on artifacts but EQ isn't good
I'm amazed by how low the artifacts are when encoding with Vorbis, but I found problems (Vorbis version 1.00) on equalization (high vs midrange vs low pitches balance) when encoding my benchmark audio track, problems which are hard to go away even at very high bitrates. My benchmark audio track is composed by me and you can find it here http://www.trombettworks.com/drumswork.php in losslessly compressed version Please have a look at the...

Samba 2.0.5a vs 2.0.6 and password changing
Hi... I wonder if someone can shed some light onto a password changing problem I'm having with 2.0.6. I have a script that is launched using the 'unix sync' procedure which all worked fine in 2.0.5a which using a script like this. #!/bin/sh echo "Enter old password:" read $OLDPASS ... ... I've only listed the first two lines as this is where it's getting stuck.

ogg@48kb/s ~ mp3@96
...tter with less artifacts. I found it sharper & clearer than a lame encoded mp3 encoded with -V9 which averaged 99kb/s. Lame defaults to a 13khz lowpass at this quality. It was very acceptable & listenable (if thats a word) on my cheap desktop speakers which have plenty of bass & midrange but not too much top-end. For desktop listening it would save a ton of space using only 360k per minute. This is great! Any reports from others testing the lower sampling frequencies? Forcing all short blocks int he encoder (Change the last line of the info_A struct in include/vorbis/modes.h to 64,0,2) makes it very obvious. I'll be hunting/killing that tonight.
