LVM and ZFS
I''m curious about if there are any potential problems with using LVM metadevices as ZFS zpool targets. I have a couple of situations where using a device directly by ZFS causes errors on the console about "Bus and lots of "stalled" I/O. But as soon as I wrap that device inside an LVM metadevice and then use it in the ZFS zpool things work perfectly fine and smoo...

What tags are supported on a zvol?
I assume that a zvol has a vtoc. What tags are supported?
Thanks,

Snapshots and backing store
Hi,
There''s something really bizarre in ZFS snaphot specs : "Uses no separate backing store." .
Hum...if I want to mutualize one physical volume somewhere in my SAN as THE snaphots backing-store...it becomes impossible to do ! Really bad.
Is there any chance to have a "backing-store-file" option in a future release ?
In the same idea, it would be great to

using veritas dmp with ZFS (but not vxvm)
We have some HDS storage that isn''t supported by mpxio, so we have to use veritas dmp to get multipathing.
Whats the recommended way to use DMP storage with ZFS. I want to use DMP but get at the multipathed virtual luns at as low a level as possible to avoid using vxvm as much as possible.
I figure theres no point in having overhead from 2 volume manages if we can avoid it.
Has anyone

mdadm problem.
...t working for some reason.
I started by doing a CentOS-4 install on /dev/sda1 as root, and with
/dev/sda2 as my swap.
I finish the install, yum update, and then I want to make the mirrors.
I copy the partition table from one disk to the other:
# sfdisk -d /dev/sda | sfdisk /dev/sdb
I create my metadevices:
# mdadm -Cv -l1 -n2 /dev/md1 /dev/sdb1 missing
# mdadm -Cv -l1 -n2 /dev/md2 /dev/sdb2 missing
I create my filesystems:
# mkfs.ext3 /dev/md1
# mkswap /dev/md2
I change the /etc/fstab to use /dev/md1 for / and /dev/md2 for swap.
I change the /etc/grub.conf to use /dev/md1 for the root= paramete...

ZFS ontop of SVM - CKSUM errors
Hi.
bash-3.00# uname -a
SunOS nfs-14-2.srv 5.10 Generic_125101-03 i86pc i386 i86pc
I created first zpool (stripe of 85 disks) and did some simple stress testing - everything seems almost alright (~700MB seq reads, ~430 seqential writes).
Then I destroyed pool and put SVM stripe on top the same disks utilizing the fact that zfs already put EFI and s0 represents almost entire disk. The on top on

zfs questions from Sun customer
Please reply to david.curtis at sun.com
******** Background / configuration **************
zpool will not create a storage pool on fibre channel storage. I''m
attached to an IBM SVC using the IBMsdd driver. I have no problem using
SVM metadevices and UFS on these devices.
List steps to reproduce the problem(if applicable):
Build Solaris 10 Update 2 server
Attach to an external storage array via IBM SVC
Load lpfc driver (6.02h)
Load IBMsdd software (1.6.1.0-2)
Attempt to use zpool create to make a storage pool:
# zpool create -f extdisk v...

Changing rpool device paths/drivers
Hello all,
It was often asked and discussed on the list about "how to
change rpool HDDs from AHCI to IDE mode" and back, with the
modern routine involving reconfiguration of the BIOS, bootup
from separate live media, simple import and export of the
rpool, and bootup from the rpool. The documented way is to
reinstall the OS upon HW changes. Both are inconvenient to
say the least.

Mixed ZFS vdev in same pool.
I have a question about using mixed vdev in the same zpool and what the community opinion is on the matter. Here is my setup:
I have four 1TB drives and two 500GB drives. When I first setup ZFS I was under the assumption that it does not really care much on how you add devices to the pool and it assumes you are thinking things through. But when I tried to create a pool (called group) with four

Serial ATA hardware raid.
Hi everyone,
I'm looking into setting up a SATA hardware raid, probably 5 to use with
CentOS 4. I chose hardware raid over software mostly because I like the
fact that the raid is transparent to the OS.
Does anyone know of any SATA controllers that are well tested for this
sort of usage?
From what I can tell from googling, this is more or less where RHEL stands:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux
