ZFS and memcntl(..., MC_SYNC, ...)
...is that the "all writes are sequential" rule of ZFS will make a big difference to the worst-case and average latency here, although obviously the best case won''t change. The "guarantee to physical media" bit is done using msync(3C), which of course results is a call to memcntl(2) passing the MC_SYNC flag. What I''m finding is that, on ZFS, this doesn''t actually synchronously write the passed pages to disk before returning - it returns far too quickly (in a few microseconds) for the vanilla SCSI disk I''m using. A quick prod with DTrace shows the...

zfs inotify?
OK, so this may be a little off-topic, but here goes: The reason I switched to OpenSolaris was primarily to take advantage of ZFS''s features when storing my digital imaging collection. I switched from a pretty stock Linux setup, but it left me at one disadvantage. I had been using inotify under Linux to trigger a series of Ruby scripts that would do all the basic ingestion/setup for

Oracle 9.2.0.6 on Solaris 10
How can I tell if this is normal behaviour? Oracle imports are horribly slow, an order of magnitude slower than on the same hardware with a slower disk array and Solaris 9. What I can look for to see where the problem lies? The server is 99% idle right now, with one database running. Each sample is about 5 seconds. I''ve tried setting kernel parameters despite the docs saying that

NFS issue with ZFS
I have Solaris 10 U7 that is exporting ZFS filesytem. The client is Solaris 9 U7. I can mount the filesytem just fine but I am unable to write to it. showmount -e shows my mount is set for everyone. the dfstab file has option rw set. So what gives? Motherboard for home zfs/solaris file server
Hello, I am building a home file server and am looking for an ATX mother board that will be supported well with OpenSolaris (onboard SATA controller, network, graphics if any, audio, etc). I decided to go for Intel based boards (socket LGA 775) since it seems like power management is better supported with Intel processors and power efficiency is an important factor. After reading several
