smbclient segfault with mulicast DNS (mdns) enabled
Hello list, Using Samba-3.0.21c (with these USE flags: cups doc postgres python xml xml2) as a standalone server on Gentoo Linux in a small LAN. I noticed the following: when using mutlicast DNS (mdns, for example to make use of zeroconf [1] in a network with Macs and Linux and Windows machines) with a resolver like Apple's mDNSResponder, avahi [3] or a client like nss-mdns [2] one has to have an mdns entry in /etc/nsswitch.conf like this: hosts: files mdns dns or hosts: files mdns4...

Trying to figure out how to make it work. Seems as though it should be pretty easy. installed package (from yum search) avahi-compat-libdns_sd.i386 : Libraries for Apple Bonjour mDNSResponder compatibility. /etc/nsswitch.conf altered line so it reads, hosts: files dns mdns mdns4 started avahi-dnsconfd service (don't know that it's needed) restarted avahi-daemon service but the syslog says... Advertising Samba shares on the local network via mDNS
...tions to query/publish network services on the local link. I would appreciate if you could all please share your thoughts on whether such support would be welcome in Samba. If you know of existing efforts in Samba to include such support please let me know as well. With this support in Samba "mDNS" aware tools & clients on Mac OS X (Bonjour), Linux(Avahi), Solaris & Windows can easily discover Samba shares on the local link. Once discovered users could go about configuring access to those shares. Thanks, Rishi

Point a Digium phone to a configuration URL using mDNS without DPMA or DHCP option 66
I have the following scenario. A small network has DHCP but does not publish option 66. An Asterisk server is on the network, but the Asterisk version does not support DPMA and it is hard to switch the version. However, there is a possibility to have a web server and an mDNS (Avahi) server. I have been reading about provisioning Digium phones without DPMA, and it mentions that option 66 can specify the URL prefix to use for the XML configuration. Is there a way to specify the same through Avahi mDNS? Something along the lines of this (of course this does not work, but...

Multicast DNS required?
Hello, I noticed all my DC's have port 5353 closed. I'm using the internal DNS and wasn't sure if multicast DNS must be enabled? I do not appear to be having any DNS issues. My only concern is with the wiki on Multicast DNS. "By default, mDNS only and exclusively resolves host names ending with the |.local| top-level domain (TLD). This can cause problems if that domain includes hosts that do not implement mDNS but can be found via a conventional unicast DNS server. Resolving such conflicts requires network configuration changes that...

mDNS is not DNS mDNS (zeroconf/avahi) ( used for .local and .lan reserved tlds ) is an apple thingy.. mDNS udp 5353 DNS tcp/udp 53. Yes, dns tcp + udp. If and dns udp package is to large it switches to tcp. got that from wiets ( the postfix developer ) So i must believe him.. wiets is great.....

IPv6?
...r so has said that it is based entirely on NetBIOS, and has no concept even of IPv4; that it is NBT that translates NetBIOS to run over IPv4. The slide show indicates that you have to use DNS for name resolution. Does that mean that if you have a DNS AAAA record, then it will use IPv6? What about mDNS? For that matter, why don't Windows workstations appear to register their link local addresses with the Windows' Sever dynamic dns foo.local domain?

IPv6 name resolution problem
...INVALID_HANDLE smbclient -L server_name.local fails with NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME As I mentioned both client and server IPv6 addresses are in local scope: fe80:0:0:0:x:x:x:x/64 I'm also using avahi-daemon with IPv6 enabled and my nsswitch.conf host's line is: hosts: files mdns_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] mdns dns An strace reveals this: RESOLVE-HOSTNAME-IPV4, but not IPV6 apparently. Any ideas? Best regards, Ernesto.

Multicast Routing & mDNS
Hi, I''m investigating getting iTunes sharing to work within a VPN. Does anybody know where I could find some documentation on forwarding mDNS packets between two subnets connected by two Linux routers? The LARTC guide just stops mid chapter. Thanks, James. Don't use .local
I'm not sure if I would not advise to use .local, sometimes it seems to be needed to make a proper location for a running domain where even .cityname cannot accomplish what you need. To be honest I don't run Avahi and will not either. Avahi and mdns are actually only designed because of of bad DNS management by system administrators and have (Apple) users use all their features, the same for TV's and so on. If you really need Avahi or so run it on .alocal, etc. Avahi and mDNS are just there because most networks are bad in DNS design by t...

Don't use .local
...everal of times. The only reason they did is because people using Apple are complaining some services are not working "well" on their OSX and it's a pain to change the DNS name of your Business Server on Windows Server As said before, running on .alocal for Avahi works perfectly and mDNS is only for small networks, and setting up some proper DNS is no problem at all. To be honest, most sysadmins don't know much about DNS or how it works, that's a fact where Microsoft has to deal with every day. Not using .local is actually a workaround and no solution for an admin which d...
