NLS results different from Excel -- Tricky fortunes nomination
Folks: I thought the following excerpt from Bruce McCullough's post would be a good candidate for the R fortunes package -- except that it's about Excel, not R! So I nominate it... but leave it to others to say whether it's really "qualified" to be nominated. ---- "The idea that the Excel solver "has a good reputation for be...

NLS results different from Excel
...the Excel solver's ability to solve the StRD nls test problems. Solver's ability is abysmal. 13 of 27 "answers" have zero accurate digits, and three more have fewer than two accurate digits -- and this is after tuning the solver to get a good answer. For details see B. D. McCullough and Berry Wilson "On the Accuracy of Statistical Procedures in Microsoft Excel 2000 and Excel XP," /Computational Statistics and Data Analysis/ *40*(4), 713-721, 2002 The situation is the same for Excel 2003 and Excel 2007. The alleged "improvements" for Excel 2010 have had...

...blic. I have also tried scp and ftp using /media/public, and they both work fine, so it doesn't seem like a common case of poor permission settings. Has anyone else ever experienced this or know of a possible cause? I'm running Fedora Core 4 if that helps. Thanks in advance, Justin McCullough

Dear All, A couple of questions about the nls package. 1. I'm trying to run a nonlinear least squares regression but the routine gives me the following error message: step factor 0.000488281 reduced below `minFactor' of 0.000976563 even though I previously wrote the following command: nls.control(minFactor = 1/4096), which should set the minFactor to a lower level than the default

Gnumeric - 1 Excel - ?
...dvocating such use, these discussions have referenced articles that provide independent reviews of these applications and issues of accuracy, etc. Based upon a posting to Linux Today (http://linuxtoday.com/news/2004022600226OSBZGN), I became aware this evening of a new paper by the well known B.D. McCullough, who has published many such reviews of both spreadsheets and other statistical applications. In the latest paper (pdf available from http://www.csdassn.org/software_reports.html), Prof. McCullough reviews Gnumeric as an example of how an open source project has responded to prior criticism of iss...

References verifying accuracy of R for basic statistical calculations and tests
Do you know of any references that verify the accuracy of R for basic statistical calculations and tests. The results of these studies should indicate that R results are the same as the results of other statistical packages to a certain number of decimal places on some benchmark calculations. Thanks, Corey Powell Clinical Data Analyst Broncus Technologies cpowell@broncus.com [[alternative

Comparison of SAS & R/Splus
I am one of only 5 or 6 people in my organization making the effort to include R/Splus as an analysis tool in everyday work - the rest of my colleagues use SAS exclusively. Today, one of them made the assertion that he believes the numerical algorithms in SAS are superior to those in Splus and R -- ie, optimization routines are faster in SAS, the SAS Institute has teams of excellent numerical

Does anybory knows any work comparing R with other (charged) statistical softwares (like Minitab, SPSS, SAS)? I work in a brasilian government bureau and I intend to use R as our preferable statistical software, but I have to show it's as good as the others. I also intend to use Weka, and for this one I have the same problem. Can anyone help me? Thanks René M. Raupp e-mail: rener@mpdft.gov.br

...ns to the derivative table in R? Please reply to me. I will post a summary to the list. Bruce PS: I believe that in R I should delete the "log" and instead use the "log.p=T" option; presumably it is numerically more efficient. If this is incorrect, please let me know. B. D. ruby-ldap crashing WEBrick server
We are trying to use Ruby-ldap 0.9.4 with Ruby 1.84 on Rails 1.1.2. All is running on top of Solaris 2.8. The overall setup works fine for doing other things like access an Oracle DB, and displaying items. When it comes to using Ruby-ldap though, it is quite a different matter. We''ve tried using Ruby-ldap within irb, and all seems well. The basic scenario is: conn =
