Simplest script to backup many Linux servers
...nc to move everything or just the important
files on each server to the mounted Raidbackup machine.
My questions is, what is the best way to do this? or what would be the
simplest script. I tried the following script;
# Backup all partitions and files
#!/bin/sh
rsync -av * 192.168.10.10:/export3/mailworks.ksl.com/
but it seems to hang quite a bit as it generates the necessary list. I
have created directories for each server name in the /export3/ directory
and to a limited extent it works. But it seems to require some more
tweaking and I'm rather at a loss.
I can backup the contents of an indiv...

Sendmail for Voicemail
When I send email from my local asterisk machine, my IP address get's
RBL'd.
Asterisk is my only reason for running sendmail, so to keep it simple, I
tried to make my ISP's mail server a 'smart host' (relaying to a trusted
mail server) but my ISP doesn't allow ANY kind of relaying these days.
I imagine there are many like me who are not sendmail experts who want

German sounds on Asterisk
Hi again
I'd like to configured my Asterisk to use german sounds for the
"Say"-commands...
I installed the sounds-files and I tried them with
"Playback(de/demo-echodone)" and it works.
Now I tried to add an extension to say the current time:
exten => 24,1,Verbose(2,Time asked by ${CALLERID(num)})
Exten => 24,n,Set(CHANNEL(language)=de)

AstDB/Berkely DB - Hash function? Balanced-Tree? b-Tree? Linked List?
Does anyone know enough about the implementation of AstDB to know
whether the data structure is a Hash function, a Balanced-Tree, a
b-Tree, or a Linked List?
I'm trying to estimate the lookup 'cost' of a AstDB with around 160,000
keys? Obviously I already know that it WILL WORK, but the question is
whether the data structure is optimal in the Berkeley DB AS IMPLEMENTED
in Asterisk.

Issue with handling of 480 DND
Hi List,
we're calling a sip phone from our Asterisk Server, and try to add logic
depending on the dialstatus
Stripped down example;

exten = 494XXXXXXXXX,n,Goto(98-${DIALSTATUS},1)
exten = 494XXXXXXXXX,n,Hangup()
.....
exten = 98-BUSY,1,NoOp(Busy)

PoE switch recommendations?
Hey, all. We're rolling out VoIP, and I'm wondering about PoE
recommendations, as we're going to have to replace our current network
equipment. My first inclination would be to just plunk down the cash and
do a Cisco system, but I'm relatively certain that would get shot down by
finance. Any recommendations for a couple-hundred-port solution with
VLANs, PoE, and QoS? Don't

Asterisk API
Hi all,
currently we're looking to program a new asterisk application. Years ago
we used AMI and Asterisk Java.
When we did this we pretty soon encountered performance issues when
using a lot of channels.
We want to place calls, bridge channels, disconnect channels, monitor
them, hangup.
What's the status with Asterisk REST API?
Any experiences on performance,stability,documentation,

German sounds on Asterisk
Hi,
from voipinfo...
If an Asterisk command specifies a sound file in a*subdirectory*,
Asterisk looks in that subdirectory for the language subdirectory. For
example, theSayDigits
<http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+cmd+SayDigits>command may
play the sound file "digits/6". Asterisk will, if the language code is
"de", first look for

That is the paper in which Jim Gray coined "Mean time to data loss".
It''s been quoted here before.

Musiconhold Problem
Hi,
we are facing the problem , that we cannot distinguish between a trunk
an an extension.
On our trunk side, if the remote user puts us on hold the same
Musiconhold is played as if we would call another extension on the sam
Asterisk PBX.
Asterisk should play the music from the remote End not "its own"

Emerging dilema? DID forwarding meets SMS
We have a number of DID's that do the standard VoIP tricks: ringing
multiple locations, findme-followme etc. What is happening more and
more is that customers call those DID numbers, and draw the reasonable
conclusion that they are calling mobile numbers because they literally
can HEAR that the called party is on a mobile. Consequently many of
those customers draw the conclusion that they

SECURITY QUESTION & SANITY CHECK
SECURITY QUESTION & SANITY CHECK:
If only my SIP ports and a small range of RTP ports are facing the
public internet, what is the method by which an evildoer would be able
to do fraudulent long distance on my nickel?
Would it REALLY be as simple as guessing the credentials for ANY of my
local sip endpoints? Like most people, my local endpoint credentials
would be easy to guess:

opensolaris crash in vn_rele()
My newly upgraded opensolaris 2008.11 laptop crashed last weekend.
(The OS was installed from the os 2008.11 live-cd and then upgraded
using the package manager to snv_111.)
I was trying to copy a large virtual pc image from my wife''s imac to the
laptop. On a whim I had decided to create a separate zvol in the
root pool to contain the image, figuring I could create a vbox
with linux or
