How to bulk add machine accounts during PDC hardware refresh?
...e.
I have seen that uid/gid numbers must match between the old/new system. I am thinking to use adduser to accomplish that, then make the numbers on the new server match, using a text editor.
After that, can I simply enter the machine account entries by hand with a text editor?
TIA!

Official Samba builds for Ubuntu?
...official builds for Ubuntu?
To add a twist, unfortunately I would not be fishing for 7.10 packages, but rather 7.04 as we ran into too many issues with 7.10 whereas 7.04 seems rock solid stable.
Or, are there packages built of Samba releases for Ubuntu external to samba.org?
Thanks,

cifs verses smbfs for Linux clients
...code in this case?
A sub question to that main one is a nagging thought of needing to add the Debian / Ubuntu smbfs package to Linux client systems issuing "mount -t cifs". If cifs really is from elsewhere, and smbfs is
"bad evil", why the interdependency?
Thanks!

Wrong perms on new files/dirs using smbmount

I added that bit to the mount command, but it made no difference.
I believe I end up with 0755/0644, but do not hold me to that as I have simply verified it is not correct and that is all the checking I have done.
Thanks!

Not seeing the expected group memberships with ifmember.exe /list

We are at least getting membership to:

What steps should we try as we try to track down this case of missing group memberships?

Countless "rec_read bad magic" lines in log.smbd
...><><><><>
On this server, all partitions are XFS.
This is the only printer at this particular site. It is attached to the LAN via an integrated JetDirect interface. Samba talks to CUPS, and from CUPS to the printer.
So, should I suspect the LAN patch cord?

Setting home path to a dir within a users Linux home dir

Windows.
Maybe there is a bit of magic someone knows, a variable to include or something?

Is there a way to support both local and roaming profile with one server / domain?
...e "magic" line that tells Samba not to do roaming profiles is the smb.conf line:
logon path =
Which the line must exist, and must be set to null.
But that is in the global section. So is there a way to support both local and roaming... with some Samba magic?! ;-)
TIA!

Samba not listening on 127.0.0.1... hua???
...change the server / workgroup name, that's it.
Running on Debian Sarge. Simo's deb packages from samba.org, trying 3.0.21b packages this time. Backed down to 3.0.21a just to make sure it was not a new bug in the (b) version. Running 3.0.21a on all
of the other servers.
TIA!

What file gets corrupted in Samba when perms stop working correctly?
...e to write, but the second one is.
With the affected user logged in to Win2K, ifmember /list shows they are a member of the group, as does the working account.
I am guessing one of those .tdb files or something got scrambled on the server. Any suggestions how to restore functionality?

Does "Admin Users =" accept groups?
...orts @groupname syntax. Google turns up lots of examples of it being used, but everyone hanging their smb.conf's up to air does not mean they are
100% accurate either.
Here, Samba 3.0.4 in PDC mode, I can not get it to accept the name of a group in /etc/group, user ID's only.

net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Users" unixgroup=domusers
net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Guests" unixgroup=domguest
5) Run the "net rpc rights..." command
But not even that fixes it.
Ideas? Thanks,

getting that plugged in to the w32time service parameters, then I would just need to flip the server type configuration to NTP.

How do you create an accout that can ONLY add workstations to the domain
...t admin
users for IPC$ and thus join the domain without allowing that special account too much access to Samba.
Maybe one extension of this would be allowing to join workstations to the domain plus read only access to a share to draw files down from while preparing the computer.
TIA!

Strange update problem 3.0.5->3.0.6 with XP-Clients
Hello world,
I have a very strange update problem: this night I upgraded
from 3.0.5 to 3.0.6 (debian unstable) and the system broke completely
with very strange errors (I did not change anything to smb.conf)
- win98 users can log in, copy and everything
- xp users can log in, they see the shares but they cannot access
the files (read error in xp). I have tested it with
Xp-Prof SP1 und SP2
