Xen fails with garbled boot screen - incompatible hardware?
...latest Xen (3.4.1) from the gitco.de repos and the
same thing happened.
This leads me to think it might be a motherboard incompatibility... I
really hope not as I''d love to get Xen working on this machine!
I connected to the serial console port and watched what was happening
and changed loglvl=all
Here''s the serial console output:

I tried checking for when in the console output that the garbled screen
started and it was either the "kjournald starting" line or after that.
Anything above that line, the monitor output w...

I was able to get login prompt ( commit 7c62209cde5b13b81685e79b2f9e3757e293aef1 ) first time via serial console:-

Automate running grub-bootxen.sh for kernel installs in Xen4CentOS
...package) and the xen kernel are
installed. But only if the user WANTS to run it.
2. Allow users to automatically modify the variables passed into the
xen.gz line (that is, more or less memory, add console settings, etc.)
If you look at the current script, "--mbargs=dom0_mem=1024M,max:1024M
loglvl=all guest_loglvl=all" is hard coded in as the only option for the
xen.gz line.
While doing that we also still want to preserve the ability to run that
kernel in other places than just for xen dom0 setups.
Here is how I propose we do that.
Currently the /usr/bin/grub-bootxen.sh file is in ce...

Xen C6 kernel 4.9.13 and testing 4.9.15 only reboots.
...t the first
system with an update. I hope I'm not introducing something odd. They only
"interesting" thing I have done for historical reasons is to change the
following /etc/sysconfig/grub line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_XEN_DEFAULT="dom0_mem=6G,max:8G cpuinfo com1=115200,8n1
console=com1,tty loglvl=all guest_loglvl=all"
But I've done that on other servers without issue. In fact I have a Dell
R710 that DOES work with CentOS 7 and the new kernel... so confused.

What is the purpose setting console=hvc0 in the dom0 grub config?

This is what's defined in /etc/default/grub following the install of the
Xen:
GRUB_CMDLINE_XEN_DEFAULT="dom0_mem=1024M,max:1024M cpuinfo com1=115200,8n1
console=com1,tty loglvl=all guest_loglvl=all"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_XEN_REPLACE_DEFAULT="console=hvc0 earlyprintk=xen
nomodeset"
I didn't set these myself, this is what the xen package (or one of its
dependencies) is doing.
I'm still not clear on why hvc0 is needed, or why it's being set, but wha...

IOMMU/AMD-Vi not working after XSA-36 with 970A-UD3
Dear mailinglist,
I own a Gigabyte motherboard GA 970A UD3 with IOMMU support. Since the
update XSA-36 (also part of the latest debian wheezy pkg), the
IO-Virtualisation does not work any more as discussed on this
mailinglist [0] and [1].
I like to ask, if there is an "official" solution in sight.
I''m not sure about my alternatives. How "dangerous" is the

/etc/grub.d/09-xen for generating grub.cfg for hypervisor boot entries.
...erating a bootable grub2 stanza for
hypervisors.
As the /etc/grub.d/* files rely on defaults in /etc/default/grub, I added
the following Xen specific variable:
GRUB_CMDLINE_XEN_DEFAULT="console=com1 115200,8n1 dom0_mem=512M
dom0_max_vcpus=1 dom0_vcpus_pin=true iommu=1,passthrough,no-intremap

apic_verbosity=verbose numa=on"
The script itself is a hacked version of the10-linux that comes with grub2.
This is 09-xen so it places it''s boot entries ahead of the non-xen entries.
The resulting grub.cfg entry looks like:
